Any assumptions about MPG and engine life of these new diesel engines are just that, assumptions.
Of course. Even the EPA sticker mpg is just a guess. The reality depends on how you drive it. Still, whether real or predicted, having a mileage increase percentage greater than the cost per gallon increase percentage is always a good thing.
I would love to have the diesel. I've got a buddy that drove from the Bay Area to Phoenix and then back towing another truck with his Diesel Sierra on about 5 gal of fuel. Granted he has a vegetable oil burner kit on his truck. Even with the extra work of filtering the stuff down and the cost of the kit at $5+ a gallon for diesel or $4+ for gas it will pay pretty quick. He also claims the power loss from teh oil isn't that much and he has more than made it back in other mods.
Our best guess is that the new 4.5L diesel will cost an extra $5k to $6k, which means a new Tundra Limited Crew 4x4 with the diesel may cost as much as $50k!
Exciting times - the Tundra diesel is coming soon!
Hummm, lets think this out. Economy is going down the old sewer pipe, average blue color worker is being asked to take COLA concessions and benefit package cuts, the middle to low level management person is in the same boat and 50K is being touted for the cost of a truck...no thanks.
Buy used fellas it's the best way to recover the hard bucks spent on a vehicle.
I've been actually looking at a Hino truck to put a camper on. Used of course. The Alaska Camper is what I've been wanting, but I can't get a firm answer on the milage of the Hino 145.
If any one has information on the 145 please PM me. thanks
Heck....there may not even be a Tundra in 2010 with the way thiings are going right now. You do know that Toyota has pretty much stopped making the Tundra right???

Yes I agree this market is soo dead it's a wasted investement Toyota is a day too late and a Day too short.Oh well back to the drawing board's and make Camry Hybrid's and Highlander hybrid's (glad i have One) .
Let's face it folk's The day's of big Suv Gas hog's are over I knew this would happen sooner or later present day market and expectations with the cost of gas have a huge roll in the overall success on Tundra and Seq sales.

Back to my last question. Does anyone here have any idea what the fuel economy is on the Hino 145? This is Toyota's commercial division; they as well have slowed production but are working on new technology for their trucks that they think will revolutionize the commercial light truck industry. But I want to know for know is the fuel economy of the 145.
Where can I order? Guess i'm getting a new one in 2010!!!!!! So now were going to have the best looking truck on the road with a diesel...that just might beat my dream truck.

We'll see a Yaris or Prius with a bed on it before we ever see a Diesel Tundra folks......Toyota is not n the business of making poor financial decisions, the 2010 Tundra Diesel concept is dead as dead can be!!!!!!

All though i believe this belongs on it's own thread . I also looked at buying a Hino before I bought my tundra . I asked many drivers of the older fa and fb Hino's what the mileage is like . I was told any where from 13.5 to 22 MPG . This did not help me at all in deciding . It was seeing what Hino offers in the rest of the world but not here . like a hybrid diesel HINO Australia - Models Hybrid
I know they are not cab overs here any more and some like that more . But man why do we get the oldest of the old tech from Hino . The hybrid has been out for 2 years now same with the ISF and 6spd auto .
Now that I don't think the tundra will come out with a heavier truck or a Diesel . I hope Hino brings all of there new tech here for us to drive .

Assuming the average mpg on a gasoline Tundra is 15 mpg and the average mpg on a tundra equipped with this diesel is 22mpg, with the price of gasoline even increasing to $5/gallon, it would take just over 47K miles to breakeven on the incremental $5K cost premium associated with this engine. Thus, you wouldn't start to see any cost savings until past year 3 (assuming you drive 15K a year). This doesn't take into account the opportunity cost of putting the $5k into an interest bearing option.
I think people are quick to forget how much gasoline $5k buys, even at these elevated prices.
That crew cab Hino with some tool boxes on the sides and an Alaskan camper on the bed would be just the ticket for me.
If someone want to split this thread into a Hino thread do so as I believe this is a worth while discussion. BTW is the crew cab available in the US? If so used ones ought to be out there.
13 mpg sound about correct for a truck like this. I drive several work rigs: F450, straight 6 White Freightliner with a 36 foot bed and a Isuzu 4 cylinder tilt cab. They all seem to do well on diesel as long as I don't get on it going through passes. In other words if I stay within the posted speed limits the fuel economy does well if not the fuel consumption goes south.
No you can't buy a crew cab Hino in the US . They are only sold in right hand drive markets . That and many other things that i posted earlier are the reason I bought a tundra. I also looked at a unimog as you can get them used in a crew cab diesel they are great off road have lots of payload are left hand drive and have so many parts and things you can add to them . I really need a truck with more payload instead I just use a trailer instead now . The tundra is still the best all around truck out there .
