I cannot believe that I am actually saying this (cause I was all about mod's on my previous truck) but isn't anyone worried about voiding your warranty with this one? (I am really sorry to be "negative" Thumbster.. this is a great idea...). I am aware of the Magnusson Moss act- where a manufacturer has to prove that the mod was responsible (or tied to) the failure, but this one seems to be very risky to me... I mean, you are removing one of the filters from the airbox, and you are also cutting a huge hole in the bottom of it! I would venture to say that Toyota could say that those modifications to the airbox could be tied to all sorts of engine component/ sensor failures.. I mean this is the intake to the entire engine... At least a Volant is a "complete intake and filter assembly". This one is basically chopping up your airbox and removing a filter from the engine's intake!
I respect your knowledge, your intuition, and your sharing this idea, but I just had to ask why you are not worried about this voiding your warranty.

I can't answer for thumbs but I'm not worried about it at all.
Plus a new OEM intake can be had for cheaper than a Volant. I look at it this way, if I had a volant I would be hanging onto an OEM box anyway so why not just hang onto two for the cheaper price than any other intake out there.
Plus when Trueflow comes out with their drop in filter it will flow even better for less cost.
The "ONLY" issue that would raise a question in context to a "free modded" air-box would be hydro-locking the motor due to excessive water induction.

As stated in my original post, I have an extra stock airbox. Believe me, there's no way I would have done this without having something to go back to. There's no way you can hurt anything with this mod other than the airbox itself.

There's no way you can hydrolock the engine with the intake modified this way. If you're driving into that much water (or a lake for that matter), you're going to suck it in from the fender well anyways.

Yes I know, but Ive heard many claims from similar, regarding CAI and modded air box's over the years.
Personally I dont like the positioning of the TB with the 90 going to the intake manifold.Hopefully the future will provide another intake that will allow a flat panel set-up simular to the LS1/LS2 from GM(BlackWing)

Thumbster,
Glad to see my airbox is being put to good use...was wondering when you would start to experiment with it! Still thinking about the headers or will you let others do that?
Greg

I was hoping you'd to chime in here Thanks again, Greg!
The whole thing started out with my wife making me clean out the garage! She said pointing to the airbox "either you do something with this or get rid of it", and so I did The longtubes are still happening, but I still need some pricey cats to get them done.

I'll have to get me one then! I tried to find another but there's nothing out there. Friggin ridiculous.
Yeah, the TRD panel didn't make that much of a difference before with the un-modded airbox, but switching back to it now really magnifies the difference! Don't get me wrong, the oe paper filter is pretty good, but the TRD panel does flow more air. I'm sure it doesn't filter as well compared to the paper filter, but we don't really have that much dust out here. It's so little of a problem that I can get away with 60k mile air filter changes on our other cars!

I got it today and put it in, $90.00 later OUCH for a friggin drop in filter
I put it in and seemed to have a lower throaty sound, the OE filter was a little more tinny I guess, hard to explain, but it's deeper with the TRD. It does seem to be a little laggy on the bottom end, but hit the sweet spot on the power band and that's where it seems to come alive more than OE.
I want to get the exhaust done and some long tubes on and then see what this baby will do, along with a chip to tune everything and this truck will scream!
Again, nice mod and it was not that bad, just one helluva mess to clean up afterward.
Make sure you disconnect the battery for a while after you put in the new filter and stick the pedal to the floor a bit. The lag is due to the ECM not being used to the higher airflow. Don't worry, it will adjust in about 20 miles.
Enjoy!
