Nice Job. I certainly wouldn't have tried it myself. The last time I tried something like that, it turned out looking homemade and starting chipping paint flecks because of poor prep (my impatience) not enough thin coats (again impatience) and no clear coat.

I did this to my 03 Tacoma a couple of years ago, except I used semi gloss engine enamel. I took the whole day: took the tires off the wheels, and sanded down the clear coat and paint, wire brushed it to death, used a self etching primer, and then put three good coats on it. After a couple of hours drying in the sun, I mounted the tires back up, and those things never even chipped and looked great until I sold that great little truck almost two weeks ago for the almighty Tundra. I've had thoughts of doing the same thing for this truck - I used to get a lot of questions from people about where I got black factory wheels for that Tacoma. It was definitely unique. And that with the black headlight mod would make for just about the meanest looking truck of all time!

That being said, here is an easy dramatic modification you can make for under $50.

The last three of Swank's pictures show the wheels painted.

Nothing from a spray can will properly match the look of chrome. If you like the OEM spoke style wheels, there is a company on ebay that takes them on trade and resells chromed ones.

Thumbs up Re: DIY Wheel Painting

You inspired me to try out the photo-shopped black rims on mine...here is a pic of the TRD's if anyone is interested. Also, if that is what the original post pics are of my bad, my firewall at work doesn't let me see some of the embedded pics.

Slate wheels.

Slate wheels with headlight and front emblem also painted.

Hope this helps.

OK I am going to paint mine this weekend. I just had one question. I have an 07 and my wheels have a little over 21k miles on them. Do I need to have a primer coat on mine and if yes what does everyone recommend?

Unless your wheels are damaged/scratched or bare metal, you DON'T NEED PRIMER. Just give the wheels a proper sanding without breaking through the clear coat and you will be fine

Good luck. Too risky for me. One thing worse than pitted and stained aluminum wheels are DIY wheels with paint flaking off.

Very true, but if you take the time to do the prep work correctly then it should not be an issue

I went with a metallic gray. They turned out pretty good I get a lot of compliments and even when I take it up to the dealer I get asked where I got them. I'll try to put some pics up but the site always gives me a hard time when I try to do it.
