This is getting very frustrating. I've had my 08 D-Cab at two dealers for a strange vibration/noise. Of course both have not been able to replicate it. It comes from the transmission tunnel area on the driver's side under load at low RPM. It's really more pronounced when engine is cold. Has anyone else had the same problem? Thanks in advance.
Interesting... I have what I call a drone when the engine is under load too. It occurs when the RPMs are between 1100 and 1600. If I put it in neutral and rev up to those rpms, it does not drone. Only under load, like when going up a slight incline. I think its my muffler because I can hear it momentarily when I "goose" the throttle when in park.
The sound seems to come from the transmission tunnel area like you say, but sometimes it sounds like its coming from the rear and other times from under the dash area. The drone sound goes up and down in pitch with the RPMs, so I don't think its the transmission. I had the dealer look at it and they said "normal". They took another Tundra out for a drive and it did the same thing.
This "drone' also causes the floor, gas pedal and steering wheel to vibrate at a high resonance.
I have just the regular, stock exhaust and the 5.7L engine.
That is exactly the same thing I'm describing!! You're right on with it vibration in the floor, gas pedal, and steering wheel. It happens to me between 1200 to 1500 rpm. When the engine is cold, it will vibrate when you put it in D with your foot on the brake. That is when it is at it's worst. I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing this.
We know. It's not really a trans or engine noise. It's more like a loose heat shield that nobody can find.
My dealer called me this morning and said they heard the noise/vibration. They are looking into the cause as I post this. I'll let you guys know what they find.

It sounds like either an exhaust issue or something resonating (like a heat shield) under the truck. The vibration that I get in the pedal, floor and steering wheel is the same kind that happens if a car with a loud exhaust pulls up beside me. I think this truck is very prone to vibrations caused by sound. I'm very interested to see if they find the cause. Please keep us posted for sure.
Dealer just called me back. They went out and started up a new one on the lot and it did the same thing. Now they are claiming it is normal. I'm not buying that!! I've owned a bunch of Toyotas. They've been excellent with not having any noises or vibrations. Now things like that are accepted as normal??!! I'm a little disappointed.
FWIW my dad has a tiny engined v6 silverado ext cab and his had what is being described here as well. GM knows about it in their trucks, the V6 typically runs rougher than the v8s anyway, for whatever reason....anyway, GMs deal is they send it out ot muffler shops and have flex pipe installed somewhere under there instead of the factory hard pipe. my dads truck was fixed that way and that dealer does a ton of them.. wonderin if the little engined tundras are the same way with the vibrations and can be fixed with a flex pipe?

But it's not just the little engined Tundra. My 5.7L has this problem too.
Sorry it took so long to post a reply. Did find the cause of the vibration. It's coming from the air intake tube coming from the inside of the right fender to the air filter housing. The mounting bolts for the tube to the fender loosen and cause the vibration. The dealer found the problem and fixed it. It lasted about a month and then started again. Took the bolts out and installed washers to take up the slack. Then locktited the bolts. No problems since I did the second fix. Hope this helps you guys having this problem.

Cool, thanks for the update! I'll check mine when I have a chance. I've often thought mine is exhaust related, but it could also be intake related I suppose. Is this something that you can check without taking stuff apart?
I drove all engine/tranny combos before purchasing my 07 w/ 4.7.....One of the determining factors in getting this engine was the LACK of these described buzzy vibrations in comparison to the 5.7 and the v6....They probably bother me more than most people....The 5.7 4x4 seemed to be the worst with the drones in the steering wheel floorboards and gas pedal...
I think most people just ignore them...I had a 06 Xterra that drove me crazy, everytime the engine passed through 1800 RPM, it buzzed like crazy..After driving another, I found that they all do it....I traded that for my Tundra..
The 4.7 might not be most peoples choice and it is certainly not the most powerful, but it is the smoothest and quietest throughout the RPM range...
Seadragon, pop the hood and check the movement of that pipe going to the air filter housing. It will have a little movement. The main issue is the two bolts mounting the pipe to the fender. They back out and cause that horrendous noise. You might just want to take those bolts out and loctite them anyway.
I agree that the 4.7 is a smooth as butter engine. My 1st gen Tundra has it. No buzzing or vibrations at all. I went with the 4.0 in my 08 because I do not need a V8 anymore and timing chain versus timing belt.

Thanks bucstundra.
I'll check this out on the weekend for sure when there's some daylight. Its the land of eternal darkness here again.
