Drove the truck a little more today on the highway. At 65mph it still does about the same as before, 18-19.5mpg. Nothing to sneeze at mind you, but no real improvement.
I did do my first oil change today (whomever designed that filter housing should be horse whipped). Instead of running 0W-20, which I don't trust to maintain viscosity for 5000 miles in hot weather, and I couldn't find; I am using Mobil 1 0W-30. So I will log the affects (if any) on fuel economy, and when I change out the 0W-30 I will try to get a used oil analysis done to see how the engine likes it if fuel economy remains the same.
I was planning to buy the AFE Stage 2 Intake (which also replaces the stock box and tube). I was going to buy it mainly for increased mpg and hp. If this works, and I feel the extra kick and increased mpg, this will save me about $400!!!
Now that I'm sticking with the stock air filter box, does anyone have any recommendations on drop-in air filters?

I highly doubt you will save $400 with your intake alone. You will probably spend more opening up your motor just to hear more of your intake sound.

Toyota Has a Drop in TRD High Flow for about $70. Since I pulled out the Charcoal filter I have picked up about 1mpg average using the TRD high flow which I put in at 500 miles I now have 15000. Took about 1 tank to start seeing the diff and it seems like I pick up about a tenth every tank only on third tank since pulling the Charcoal filter. For what its worth.

I removed my carbon, reset computer and it still revs high when starting. Does anybody elses truck still do that?
Completely normal, and removing a carbon filter is not going to affect it. The high rev is to warm up the catalytic converters, thereby allowing the truck to pass a cold-start emissions test.
What I don’t understand is why they put a “permanent” filter, after the air filter. Eventually I would think that it would get dirty, block airflow and just generally be a PIA, which needs to be replaced. Just my 2cents. Oh yeah I bet the dealer would be happy to replace for you at $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!.:rol leyes:

You answered your own question - it's after the air filter.
