Has anyone just tired reseting the ECU??? I went from 341mpt (mile per tank)before removing the filter and after removing the filter and reseting the computer I went to 405mpt on the first fill and 395mpt on the second fill... so says the mileage range meter. I just wonder if its from the reset, rather then the filter. I've been told the tank has a 23 gallon capacity but the range meter only reads 21 gallons... just my .02

It doesn't matter what the range says, check your gas mileage (miles per gallon).

Reseting the computer was the first thing I did when I got my truck. The previous owner drove it a little harder then I did. The average mpg read 15.6 I reset it and it learned my driving habits and it now reads 18.4, and thats freaking close to my calculations by hand.

Here are some numbers to show how much (or how little) might be saved over one year by a small improvement in average MPG. The chart assumes that you drive 15,000 miles in a year and your average price per gallon is $4.00. The savings column is incremental, so if you currently average 15.0 MPG and you make improvements to average 16.0 MPG then your annual savings would be $250: you simply add the savings together for each increment, so $129 + $121 = $250.
Now compare your potential savings with the following factors:
time and money that you spend to modify the truck
additional drive time that you might incur by driving slower
possibility of future repairs if your modifications end up harming the truck over the long run
negative impact on the environment by modifying the truck
potential for additional fees or fines if your truck fails a required inspection test
I am not saying it isn't worth it, just saying that you should consider all the factors before making a change. Personally I prefer to keep my truck in stock configuration unless I can save more than $500 per year. Even if the HC filter removal increased my MPG from 16.0 to 18.0 then it would still only save me $417 in the first year, and based on most comments above I wouldn't expect more than 0.5 improvement. So for now I will just remove unnecessary cargo such as the spare tire and some tool boxes. This may save just as much or even more and it won't cost me anything or do any harm. To each his own.
Why would your warranty be voided from pulling out the HC screen? There's no way you could damage anything by doing that. One could argue that other smog legal intakes don't have this screen and there use can't void your warranty according to the magnuson moss act.

Well, after the ECU reset, HC removal, and a couple tanks of gas, my idle speed is back up consistently to about 700 ... I'm also now getting consistent 14.9 to 15.1 MPG city driving, if I don't use my lead foot. Don't know for sure that the HC removal is responsible for any of the improvement. But I'm happy as can be getting this mileage in this truck - I use all day, everyday, for work.

I haven't done either the HC or ECU reset mod...all I have done is install a K&N drop-in filter. My around town mileage is always 17 or 17.5, and my freeway mileage is between 18.5 & 20mpg. I frankly don't understand why so many are reporting such low mileages. My truck just turned 22k, always runs on 87 Octane gas, and loves to race Chevys and Rams.
I will probably get flamed for this post, but it's the truth!

I think it is the Salsa Red, I get pretty much the same as LeeinAZ, just over 18,000 on mine and yes it's real flat here in the Houston area

Okay, I am gonna try this mod...
BUT, I am gonna try just re-setting the ECU first to see what that does first. I think I made my truck a gas hog when I first got it by breaking it in by driving it like a bat out of hell. I read Moto-Man's article (link on this site) about running the engine really hard for the first 20-30 miles to "seat the rings" during break-in and I agreed with the logic (and member supporters) so I did it.. After reading ALL of this thread, I think I trained the ECU to suck gas!!! I admit that I am running bigger tires (305/55/20 Toyo A/T's), but I am consistently averaging 12.7mpg!!!
My driving includes heavy rush hour stop n go traffic along a 3 mile parkway twice a day, and then the rest is pretty much highway driving. Again, I admit that I have wider, heavier tires but 12.7mpg!! And THAT is driving 70 on the highway and not really ever punching the gas on starts or passing!
I am going to re-set my ECU tonight and see how my MPG does with my MUCH more reasonable driving than I did when I FIRST got the truck- to break it in.. I will drive it on my daily work commute for a full week, and post how just re-setting the ECU worked for me. I hope (and think) that just doing this will help.
After this week, I will take out the HC filter this weekend, re-set the ECU again, and see how THAT does.
Any other recommendations regarding this mod?

Excalibur AL-2000 2-way pager alarm with remote start and dark as legally possible tint installed the very next day
305/55/20 Toyo A/T tires and black with machined lip ATX Vice wheels installed the day after that!
Aries 4" Deluxe Oval tube steps.
Sirius Satelite Radio installed using wleeb's awesome DIY.
I took the filter out yesterday. I found that if you take a thin blade screw driver, slip it between the cover and filter and just twist the screwdriver right next to each post it pops each post cleanly and doesn't harm the filter. If you ever want to put it back in for any reason a little glue would put it back in place and it would look like it was never removed.
Now for the first result. I have a 07 DC 5.7 two wheel drive. The truck is stock, with stock wheels and tires. My drive to work is 22 miles, mostly flat. 3 stop signs and the road speed is mostly 65 MPH: 50 MPH for about 5 miles. Driving the truck very easy and coasting to a stop has netted me a consistent 20.5 MPG. After removing the filter I got 22.2 MPG today driving the same way I usually do. Outside air temp was 106 degrees, air conditioning on (Arizona). I did not re set the computer. I figure it will learn itself. I drive the truck easy most of the time unless I find a chevy, ford or dodge that needs a spanking. I'm looking forward to a longer trip. Driving on the freeway at 78 MPH thru Arizona, then 70 in California, with the last part of the drive being 55 to 65 MPH, I've been getting about 18.5 MPG. It's mostly flat with some slight up hill or down hill, about 350 miles.
I run the air pressure up a little on the tires. The worst mileage I ever got on the longer trip was 16.5 MPG with a really strong head wind.
I'm really surprised at the MPG I am getting.
I'll stick with the full size truck. A co worker just got in an accident in his Corola, hitting a SUV that turned in front of him when he was going 65 MPH. He was hurt pretty bad and had to be cut out of the little car and air lifted to the hospital. I'll give up some MPG for the safety of the larger vehicle.
I drive conservatively (try to keep under 2k rpm accelerating, 65 with CC on highway, etc.) on my 07 5.7 DC 4x4 and was avg. 17.5 mpg with Corsa catback (16.6 before Corsa) mostly on my somewhat flat 26 mile (2/3 hwy, 1/3 city) each way daily commute. Popped out HC filter (yes I cracked the frame!), reset ECU, and now avg. 18.8 mpg on same commute. Don't care if its due to ECU reset, HC gone or pixxy dust, I'll take it!
