Pulled mine out today but I still have to disconnect the battery to reset things. Took about 2 min and flat blade to get he filter out. Not a big difference in the sound though. It took me longer to convince the wife to let me pull it than to actually due (only about 30 sec longer though)
I am seeing around 0.7 mpg increase with absolutely no conscious change in driving habits.

Here are some numbers to show how much (or how little) might be saved over one year by a small improvement in average MPG. The chart assumes that you drive 15,000 miles in a year and your average price per gallon is $4.00. The savings column is incremental, so if you currently average 15.0 MPG and you make improvements to average 16.0 MPG then your annual savings would be $250: you simply add the savings together for each increment, so $129 + $121 = $250.
Now compare your potential savings with the following factors:
time and money that you spend to modify the truck
additional drive time that you might incur by driving slower
possibility of future repairs if your modifications end up harming the truck over the long run
negative impact on the environment by modifying the truck
potential for additional fees or fines if your truck fails a required inspection test
I am not saying it isn't worth it, just saying that you should consider all the factors before making a change. Personally I prefer to keep my truck in stock configuration unless I can save more than $500 per year. Even if the HC filter removal increased my MPG from 16.0 to 18.0 then it would still only save me $417 in the first year, and based on most comments above I wouldn't expect more than 0.5 improvement. So for now I will just remove unnecessary cargo such as the spare tire and some tool boxes. This may save just as much or even more and it won't cost me anything or do any harm. To each his own.
I have been around this fourm for some time now. And know that wileetundra does the research and analysis. I would second this opinion.
took out carbon filter and disconnected negative battery terminal for about 20 minutes. owned truck for a year and never reset ecu. things i've noticed after removal and reset:
1. $75 worth of gas (pump automatically stopped) yields about 18 gallons and "range" read 433 miles until empty. before removal and reset $80 to $90 worth of gas would top off fuel tank and "range" read 341 miles until empty.
2. for first few miles i sand bagged around town and followed slowest moving vehicles for truck to learn granny driving habits and "average" read has been between 18.0mpg and 17.4mpg. before removal and reset "range" read was steady at 15.7mpg after a year without reset.
3. after really getting on the throttle, haven't really noticed quicker throttle response or throaty sound
after taking out carbon filter, hold it up in front of your face and try to blow through the filter and see if you can feel anything on the other side with your hand...or put your truck ac full blast and put filter in front of vent and see what else you feel....nothing!
Another 100 miles or so, and still no increase in fuel economy. Exactly the same as before.
same here. its all a placebo effect for those who are seeing gains. and how the heck can anyone get this truck do do 19+ mpg and show more than 300 miles range on the display? i was excited to see mine show 317 range one day on a fill up but quickly dropped to less than 300 when i pulled out....

I don't know if this mod does anything or not, but you can at least make the computer look like something is happening.
haha yeah ive seen those doctored up photos too. i can make mine say 99.9 mpg if i drive fast then let off and coast....maybe thats what i should do....and yes it will say that high of range right after a battery disconnect if u baby it for the first little bit but then it goes right back to what it was, just as has been posted here. it just hasnt learned again yet...
Slightly off topic...do you have to have certain options to see the range readout on the clock and on the ODO?
Mine is a base model and I don't seem to have it.
yes, not sure if the base models even have the trip/etc computer but my SR5 has the mpg etc display up by the clock in the middle of the dash, with buttons to work it on the dash to teh right of the steering wheel. the limiteds have teh fancy shmancy displays in the speedometer area.....

Oh I can get it to return 18.5-19.5MPG no problem, always have. Just drive 65MPH and keep revs below 2K RPM's if possible, don't accelerate aggressively and try to drive in a smooth manner that doesn't have you speeding up or slowing down all the time.

no, sir. stepping off the gas will only increase your instantaneous MPG readout, not the average. and I would love to see the photo, undoctored of course, that shows the 99.9 you state.
