I admit that I was skeptical when I first read this post...
Then I said wot da heck might as well try it...
I followed the directions groundedout the battery and set off on a 65 mile trip to Chicago using the 'freeways'
my previous all time best was 17.6 mpg....this trip, driven just under 2000 rpm @ 63 mph resulted in 19.1 mpg !
That aint bad for a 'rollng brick,'
Appreciate the time and effort to research and postr this info !
Hey, every little bit helps in this economy ....

That is about what I get for normal mileage at 65 mph, both before and after the HC filter removal.

What was your normal speed on the same route before removing the screen? Same driving habits?

Same speed and route, done multiple times...
According to the 'puter it is definetly better..but...I'll do a 'hand calculation' and give it some more miles before I am totally 'convinced'.
First look seems promising...

100% chance it will do no harm.

Beyond that it is a crap shoot on doing any good. It had no affect on my mileage, but I was already getting good mileage.

If you hit the top of a long downgrade doing about 80 mph, put it in neutral, and hit the reset button for the average mpg it will show a big number. Don't know if 99.9 is possible, but if I'm bored out of my mind someday I will try it

I have a 5.7 and drive a consistant route each week, I average 15.1 to 15.4, and have been watching my fuel closely for about 3 months. Best mpg I've ever gotten was 15.7 out of a tank. I pulled the HC filter and disconnected the battery to reset it. I'm now averaging 16.4 - 16.7 mpg in two fillups. I've never seen this high of mpg.

Chalk up another believer in this mod!

I posted awile back after I removed my fish filter and said I'd keep you all informed, well I'm a believer in this mod, i'm at .7mpg improvement with a lifted truck and all stop and go city driving, it did get better mileage on the hi way too , but I dont drive that every day.

I got the TRD CAI (cold air intake) the other day and am gonna install that. Does it have a HC filter in it? If so, how do I know what it looks like? Anyone have any pics or more info for those of you that removed it from your TRD CAI?

99.9 is possible on the instant one I see it everyday. If there is no load what so ever on the engine the computer will read that. Now the average mpg re-calculates itself every 10 seconds. I was real bored one day and actually reset my computer while I was going down hill. It was 99.9 but then it down shifted and after 10 seconds it showed somewhere in the 45mpg range. Its right next to your clock so its really easy to look at. Just keep track of the flashing : sign and at 10 seconds it will change.

Hey Gang,

Here is my follow up to the HC mod. I now average 18.9MPG in mixed driving(up from 17.5mpg). I will not say this is all the HC mod but a combo of the mod and computer reset, but I will take it.

Now, After I fill up and resest all of average's on the trip computer(Limited Model) my miles to empty reads 426. If I truely am getting 18.9mpg and the tank is 26 gallons, it should show 491 miles to empty. No way in heck this truck will get any where close to 491 miles on a tank of gas unless being towed???? Right now I have a half tank of gas and my trip meter shows 202miles and my miles to empty is showing 218 with an average of 18.9mpg on the computer. These numbers are not adding up........

So is the on board computer legit or does it have errors? Am I truely getting the advertised 18.9mpg that it shows???

The mod was free so no big deal......Never reached into the 18mpg range before and after 12K on the truck mine reads 18.9mpg.

Not to bad for a moving brick Crewmax 4x4 5.7L beast.......

Yes, the TRD CAI does have the HC filter in it. It is very easy to identify and remove. It is inside of the top portion of the intake. It is a flat, white filter. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to pop it out (it is plastic riveted in). Sorry, I did not take pics, but it is very simple. Good luck.
