That's a great point. I've been in the habit of carrying a full tool box and even a few spare parts for my vehicles. This habit goes back to my old '79 Chevy days when I could, and did, repair my old truck alongside the road on many an occassion.
With these new Tundras, there are darn few things I could fix roadside anyway. Plus, the Toyota trucks never seem to break down anyway. So I 86ed the heavy toolbox and just carry a select set of basic tools and things like duct tape.
By removing the better part of 100 lbs from my truck, I likely saved a few bucks on gas without tampering with my complex and expensive engine.
I've also got multiple tool boxes full of tools/parts in the house now. LOL. If I wanted to worry about gas mileage alone, I would have gotten a different vehicle.
I totally agree with you too. People that complain about their gas mileage should have bought a diff vehicle. I am going to remove my spare because it is too small compared to my 35's and its just stupid added weight. And I am saving money on gas cuz my wife only weighs 120 pounds!!!

Here is my update so far: (and I haven't even done the mod yet!)
I reset my ECU on Monday evening- July 7th... This is my "baseline" to see if this mod helps MY mileage at all. I am (somewhat) happy to announce that JUST disconnecting my neg battery cable for 20 minutes the re-connecting has changed my avg fuel mileage from the 12.7 that I was very consistently getting to 13.1 at the end of my 250 mile test window. This consisted of Tues-Friday of my normal "work week" driving (outlined above, and Saturday and Sunday of random weekend driving.
Since I never saw true "tankful avg" over 13 prior to this ECU reset, I am convinced that just doing this helped a little already. I am going to use 13.1mpg as my baseline for the HC filter removal, which I will do tonight.
I'll keep you all posted.
Well, I just put another 250 miles on my truck after I removed the HC filter and I'm not too happy... At the end of 250 miles, my mileage was still at 13.1!! It had goten up to 13.3, but it was only at 13.1 at mile 250... bummer...
From there, I took a road trip (70 miles each way) with a pretty full truck (wife, 2 10 year old kids, dog, and a bed full of camping gear), and my mileage got up to 13.4 on the way there. I am back home now, and it is back DOWN to 13.3.
I drove between 65 and 75 the whole way (tried to keep it right at 70), and kept the RPM's under 2K most of the time. I thought this mod would help me more than it has. I will keep hoping, but I just wanted to post my update at the end of the 250 mile test window.
By the way, I really have been babying the throttle to stay "consistent" during all this testing, so I haven't had much chance to tell if I can notice any performance enhancements from this mod, but I THINK I can tell that the throttle response is a little better. I really dunno though. I did not expect much perf gains from this, but I sure was hoping for some mileage increases..
I guess the bottom line AND THIS IS VERY NOTEWORTHY is that I got a larger mileage increase (from 12.7 to 13.1) when I JUST re-set my ECU. I only went from 13.1 to 13.3 when I removed the HC Filter..
Again... Bummer... Hopefully it gets better.

I installed the Truxxx 3/1 leveling kit the day after I got it. PAIN IN THE A!! Get a shop to do it!!
Excalibur AL-2000 2-way pager alarm with remote start and dark as legally possible tint installed the very next day
305/55/20 Toyo A/T tires and black with machined lip ATX Vice wheels installed the day after that!
Aries 4" Deluxe Oval tube steps.
Sirius Satelite Radio installed using wleeb's awesome DIY.
So is the on board computer legit or does it have errors? Am I truely getting the advertised 18.9mpg that it shows???
The safe way to calculate your mpg is to manually calculate it. Fill up, drive, fill up again and divide: simple math. Mostt on here that have done this say the computer is very close to the manual calculations. Some have stated within .2 mpg which is pretty accurate imo.

man your gas mileage is horrible. i average 15.7 driving in city and alittle on the highway and thats driving pretty agressive. if i baby it i will get 16.6 average. before lift and tires i was getting 17.7. i wonder why some people get so bad mileage and some get pretty good. anyway i removed my carbon filter and really only noticed better throttle response.
When I go out of town I drive from North San Diego County to Yuma Az. It is a 200 mile trip but I have to go thru the Laguna mts. With the driving being a third mountain miles I get 13 mpg on average and that is driving 80 mph. I have never driven a far distance on a flat road and then calculated mpg.

Gas blends can make a big difference. The amount of detergents, oxygenating chemicals, and ethanol present in the fuel will make a very large difference.
I showed this post to my wife and she is totally cracking up!

What's the talk about disconnecting the battery. Does this apply to the removal of the charcoal filter and, if so, why?
Please read the entire thread and you will know the answer to your ? and more!

Have you or anyone tested if this mod works while driving 70-80 mph? If you claim you save 2-3 mpg at 65 mph then someone that drives 75 may save 1.25 mpg. ??? So it would be worth it.
Also, I have always noticed with past trucks that a certain speed allows for the best mpg and it hasnt always been 55 mph. My last truck F150 5.4L got better gas mileage at 77 mph then it did at 67 mph. I am sure others have foud the same to be true.

That sounds very odd to me...higher rpm usually = less mpg.
The Double Cab Tundra with the 5.7 gets the best mileage at 40 to 45mph, once it's in 6th.

I was referring to higher speeds <60mph. And where can you drive 40 mph for a long distance to measure mpg? You would have old grannys on the freeway driving past you!
