the charcoal filter does not prevent backflow of gases, it just filters the return air. it does make the exhaust throatier, so it does change the airflow, which affects the ecu some how.

Did my TRD CAI last nite, used a small screw driver to pry the melted over part away. Easy to do and as far as I can tell MPG is better by 1 MPG. Removed cable while doing fix, took about 20 min. Works for me. If I need to put it back in for service i'll use a little 2 sided tape to hold it in, then take it back out.

i popped mine out with a screwdriver also. easy to do, just pop the airbox lid and pry it out. took about 20-30sec. i have not noticed better mpg , but i did notice better throttle response. note: i did not lose any mpg, just stayed about the same. removed it last week. maybe i need to do the battery disconnect

So far I've gained about 1.2mpg from removing it and have noticed a slight increase in throttle response. Definitely a nice mod .

Removed mine and did the battery reset, haven't tested for fuel economy improvement yet. The filter will need double sided tape to stay in place again if I need to put it back. Throttle response is marginally improved, and the high idle on start up seems to be diminished a little.

If fuel economy improves I will be doing the same thing to the wife's car. It too has a HC filter in the air box, and it will be coming out if this works on the truck.

funny how you said it seems to diminish the high idle start. it seemed to me it made my exhaust louder on start up. maybe my imagination though

The high idle might also not be happening because the temp is much higher than it has been all year. It was nearly 90 degrees today and the truck may not have needed the higher idle speed since it was closer to operating temp.

Either way I didn't notice any massive, or even measurable power gains. If anything this is probably not going to render any gains, but it doesn't hurt anything so why not give her a try?

Just removed mine this morning. Wow, that thing comes out real easy. Using a small flat head screw driver, it just popped out in seconds. Have not reset computer yet.

The high idle will not correct itself unless you reset the computer (disconnect battery). You won't see the maximum benefit of this mod without doing this.

Just an FYI for you guys that didn't read the intake mod thread -

I had my truck dynoed again and got some good results. I put down 322hp / 334ft.lbs (up from 305hp / 315ft.lbs baseline with just a catback exhaust) That's a 17hp / 19ft.lbs improvement! Furthermore I gained a fair amount of midrange torque. I'm sure the catback combined with the intake mod is the key to these gains. Unfortunately the jpeg file of the dyno run was corrupted, so I couldn't open it back up and the dyno operator didn't save it on his computer. I may go back and do another couple of runs after the truck gets a few more miles on it.

You guy that are getting high mpg must not have aftermarket tires and 4x4. I drove my truck all highway on a 300 mile stretch at 65mph with cruise control and the avg was 15.7. I would give anything for 19.8!

Just remove your MAF sensor first and reach inside to push out close to the tabs and should do it. But do not be surprise if some of the tabs will break. If we are needing to put it back I am thinking using a spot caulking. Enjoy!!!

Reseting is the proper way to get your MAF sense the rich air coming in. Just like other recommendations.
