Fish tank....I like it.

To use mpg as your barometer, I would go over a much longer interval, as opposed to watching that gauge.

Dragstrip tests were pretty revealing for me. Three tenths better on a Gen 1.

To all:

Just wonder after removing the carbon filter, do I have to replace the original (OEM) filter with K&N or some kind of performance want? BTW, what is LOL, and HC?????? I've seen a lot on here but don't really know what exactly they are.....I know LOL === Laugh out Loud, but I don't think it apply on this thread, right?

I'm still using the stock filter, but might upgrade to the TRD filter.

LOL can be applied to anypost

HC has already been answered in this thread.

If after a month of driving, everyone is still getting better gas mileage across the board, I'll consider this mod a success. Either way Im going to try it.. you all have me convinced.

Well I have about 100 more miles on the truck now, and my average is basically the same. However due to the low traffic density out here (thus smooth steady state cruising) I was getting an average of 18-19+ MPG on the highway anyway. This mod might be beneficial to those that have to speed up more often from slowing down, but seems to have little effect for me. I can't honestly say I have noticed any increase in throttle response either.

Ahh I see now what you meant.

I just put the drop in K&N filter and once again reset my computer. Its already showing me at 20mpg. So I got another 1 mpg gain from doing this whole mod. Went from 17.5 to 20 mpg. Another thing on the computer setting I only do it after I fill up so I don't have to keep track of my already used mileage on that tank.

I like this mod, but maybe were all forgetting that summer is bringing warmer temperatures, so comparing current MPG's to month old numbers will affect the results.

I'm just skeptical - not saying it doesn't do what you're claiming. I'll definitely keep an eye on this thread for long term results as they come in.

I am thinking of pulling my HC to test the theory. I have detailed MPG records from the computer and my own manual calculations going back to the first tank off the dealer lot so I should be able to spot even a slight increase.

The main factor for MPG seems to be your average speed. 50-60 mph is the most efficient speed range for almost all conditions but very few people seem to drive this speed. It isn't even safe to drive 55 when the speed limit is 70 and everyone is doing 75-85. But if you want the best MPG then slow it down.

The next biggest factor seems to be driving conditions. Driving uphill, into a head wind, in hot weather, and in higher elevations seems like it would lower your MPG no matter what you do. Driving on flat level highways, no wind, cold weather, with no traffic and few lights would make it a whole lot better but few of us get to do that regularly.

The next biggest factor seems to be vehicle weight. Lots of passengers or cargo will reduce MPG significantly. So I am thinking about removing my spare tire, tool boxes, and misc. stuff which I don't use that often. Heck, I could even remove the back seats since I rarely need them. I wonder if this would save me any real $$?

When you just driving steady at about 2000 RPM, I doubt removal of the filter would make a big difference as the engine is not drawing a large volume of air. I do think it will help when getting into the gas, as there would be less restriction. I live in an area with dusty roads, so I'm sticking with the stock paper filter, but will try popping out the other filter. When driven easy on my 44 mile round trip to work, I average around 20 MPG. It's all flat highway driven at 55 to 65 MPH. A strong headwind will knock the mileage down some however. It does look like a pretty big restriction when going thru the upper RPM's. As the Tundra runs rich at WOT, it should give it a few more ponies. I just hate that crap 10% ethanol fuel. It always cut into my mileage.

Default Re: 19.8mpg after HC removed!

i pulled my fish tank filter out and saw no difference in MPG. but i regularly get 18.5 mpg back and forth to work and 19.5 mpg on the interstate (and thats at 75mph)..
i think what you guys are seeing for mpg increase is the reset of the ecu. i reset my ecu at the end of winter when i notice my truck was running slower than i remembered. after the reset my mpg went way up from 15mpg and truck felt so much stronger. these two factors go hand and hand>>>> lean out the Air/fuel ratio and you make more power which results in less fuel consumption

i had to do this ecu reset from time to time on my old WRX to get better fuel milage and more power. with the WRX it was more obvious because my wideband Air/fuel gauge would read rich and EGT gauge would read colder

If the mod is not CARB approved it most likely is no legal in Ca.

But you go 6 years on a new vehicle before a smog check in Ca, so I'll worry about it then.

Truck seems more peppy according to the Butt Dyno.
Havn't checked MPG.
