Noises and clunks simplified
After reading recent posts in some threads, there seems to be some confusion as to different noises and conditions in the Tundra. I thought it might be nice to clear up these different issues in one thread to simplify things a bit.
Please feel free to add your own entries, but this will hopefully clarify some of the commonly posted issues some of us are wondering about. Thanks to those who posted the TSBs that are refered to below!
The noises/conditions people seem to be asking about are:
Condition 1 - clunk sound from front
Symptom: Clunk that occurs when driving away after starting the engine. Clunk does not occur again until the engine has been shut off and started again. This sound comes from the front of the truck.
Remedy: This is normal operation for the truck. The clunk is the ABS/VSC system doing a self check and occurs at 12 MPH (or 20 Km/h) after starting the engine. It occurs at the same time the doors auto-lock if you have that feature on your truck.
Condition 2 - whining sound from engine
Symptom: Whining sound coming from engine compartment after starting the truck. Sounds like a turbine and lasts for about 20 seconds. Usually occurs only when starting a cold engine.
Remedy: This is normal operation for the truck. It is an air injection system that pumps air into the catalytic converters to help with emissions.
Condition 3 - clunk from rear
Symptom: Clunk when accelerating from a stop or rolling stop. The clunk can also occur after coming to a complete stop and may feel like being bumped from behind. The clunk comes from the rear of the truck.
Remedy: This is not normal and a TSB has been issued. TSB No. T-SB-0115-08 addresses this situation. This involves checking/replacing the rear driveshaft.
Condition 4 - rubbing sound from front
Symptom: Rubbing or grinding sound coming from front of truck. Noticeable at lower speeds (15 to 30 MPH) and can sound like a "wu wu wu wu" and be felt in the steering wheel, gas pedal and or floorboards. Sound is cyclical and speeds up or slows down based on how fast the wheels are turning.
Remedy: This is not normal and a TSB has been issued. TSB No. T-SB-0121-08 addresses this situation. This involves checking/replacing the front axles and/or front differential.
