TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "I need some help or advice", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hey, I new to the forum and I am looking for some help that my 4.7L 07 DC (14800 miles) is having. I got my truck back yesterday after it spent 4 days at Dave Edwards Toyota in Spartanburg SC ( purchase dealer ). 3 techs and the dealer service manager all agree that my truck has a problem but were unable to fix it. 2 weeks ago it starting making a moaning/vibration/harmonic noise out of the what seems to be the drive line to me. It will only do this at precisely 1800 RPMS and with less than half throttle. It will do it in every gear and constantly when going about 58 MPH which is 1800 RPMS in 5th gear. It is very loud and annoying. The dealer said they moved things around under the dash thinking that would help, it did nothing except piss me off, because it clearly sounds like it is coming from the drive train. It is not driving bad, power is normal, not shifting bad and is getting a constant 19 mpg. If anyone else has experienced anything like this at all please chime in. If I can't get it fixed I am going to think seriously about trading it, however I love my truck and would much rather get it fixed. Thanks.

All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-a$$ed set of tires on his truck.

I think all states have a lemon law. What you have to go through b4 law takes effect is different. Look into it if I were you.
What did you add to the bed? Bedliner? Bed mat? etc?
If I were concerned about the driveline vs inside dash cra*p, I'd have someone drive my truck and I get in the bed and see if I can still notice it from the outside. If I do, then unlikely it's from the inside dash.
Plus, hopefully you can furher isolate if it's from the front, or rear, or right or left side. But those are something that your dealer should do, not you. Just a thought. And I'm not a mechanic, nor did I stay at a holiday inn, so take it w/ a grain of salt.
Thanks for your input man. Whatever the noise is it is definitely a metallic origin, I have never heard anything plastic make the type of sound it is making. The closest thing I can describe it to is a whining rear axle like when a ring and pinion are misaligned. I had a camaro that did that. I know it is not the ring and pinion in this truck because it is not speed related at all, it is only related to the amount of RPMs the motor is turning.

This statement makes me think WTF??? Some dealers never cease to amaze me. My local dealerships would never give me back my brand new truck if they knew there was a problem. They'd call in Toyota Corp. before they would ever admit they couldn't figure it out or fix it.
I just don't get it.

Well, I don't get it either, I lost 4 days use of my truck and granted I do not use it for work, other than the Lowe's run or hauling off the garbage, but none the less, it came back to me less a quarter of a tank of gas, 80 additional miles and not fixed. I told the service writer that if it left me stranded, I did not care if it was 500 miles from their dealer they would be be picking it up and towing it to their dealer. He knew I was pissed off when I left. We spent $55K at that dealer last summer, between our new Camry SE and my new TRD Tundra, so yeah I am not happy with them.
Yeah no doubt
What I cant understand is how people can "leave" a dealership with unsettled issues ??? WTF !?!
We would be toe to toe till the sun rose in the east and set in the west.I dont put up with that whether its truck issues or cold fries thru the drive thru.Until my 3/36 expires YOU WILL KISS MY "CUSTOMER" @$$ or pay cash for me to leave. Non Confrontational my @$$ !!

The fact that it seems only RPM related makes me wonder whether something is touching that shouldn't be. Something that comes to mind is a heat shield transferring exhaust vibration to the cabin floor or something of that nature (with varying vibration pitches). I haven't crawled under my DC since changing oil a month or so ago, so I can't think of anything right off the bat. I was thinking rearend until you mentioned RPM related-only.
Not that Toyota is that stupid, but I once had a Ford dealer ready to fork over a new car after 6 months of work on a new car only to have me find a bad spark plug wired one night. That was the last Ford...

I think I am going to do some investigating on my own on this issue myself. I haven't been under it but I just noticed there is another thread that is discribing the same issue however they are both different powertrains. I think it is definitely something due to the exhaust. 4 of my friends rode in it on the 4th and they all thought the same thing. Interesting that none of them had a hard time hearing it but the dealer said they barely could.
