Took in my 07 Tundra DC 2WD with 28.5k in for normal service and a faint humm at or above 60mph. I just received a call from the dealer to say they will be replacing my rear differential. Is there anything I need to be aware of upon this type of failure? I do have the platinum care until 100k.
In the maintenance guide for the Tundra it says 30,000mi is time for the differential fluid to be replaced (if towing), otherwise just inspection. Toyota Parts and Service
Maybe the inspection didn't go so well?

There is another post here that shows pictures of some pretty large pieces of metel coming out after a change at about 17K. I think I'm gonna ask them to change mine during the 20K service.

I too had my diff replaced. The diff was making a clunk while accelerating, then another clunk during deceleration, I had to make a big deal about it, cause they said it was probably just the brake calipers were loose, which IMO is not a good option either. But they figured it out and replaced under waranty. I think mine went at about 20,000 miles or so.
faster then most i think my truck is doing the samething you have just described i'm taking it in tmrw and having it looked at i'm at 20k already and had the front replaced already and also the 4x4 makes loud grinding noise when i'm off road and when i'm on a straight road and put in 4x4 and accelerate it makes a loud racket

Mine makes the same hum at about 60 MPH. It's a 2WD. Let us know what you find out. I have about 25K miles on mine and the sound has not changed since it was new.
I changed my diff oil at 3000 miles just to get the break in crud out of there. The drainplug magnet only had some "fuzz"on it and one tiny shaving of metal that looked to be left over from Toyota (Dana for that matter) machining the axle tubes. I am saving the original diff oil just in case there would be a problem in the future. My rear differential was dead quiet from day one.

Apples-and-oranges comparison but the rear axle on my father's '97 F150 with 125K miles has whined since day one. It's never towed much but it show's no signs of failure and hasn't gotten louder over the years. Ford eventually issued a TSB that amounted to a total rebuild.
I hope this is a rarity-- I'm still on the fence about a Tundra purchase and have little desire to head towards the blue oval for my truck needs...
Time for another new rear differential!!!! I had one go at 20k miles and I now have 35k miles and they are putting another one in! My tranny was the reason I went in because of the hard shift from second to third, and it was a shift that felt like I was going to drop the drive line. I would litteraly be slamed back in my seat.So on with the testing they went and the news is that I need A new tranny and a A new diff!!! Luckily the guys at the dealership I go to are very nice and are on top of everything. I am however very unpleased with the on going problems with my drivetrain. I do have the 100K platinum warranty so thank god for that but what is going to happen later on down the road? Anyone else having these issues?

You've just got to hope that Toyota is constantly making little revisions to parts as they find problems with them, so the tranny that is going in to your truck is updated from the one coming out. You can look at part numbers to see how many revisions they have gone through.
Rone, how would I go about looking up new revisions? I also am wondring if i should look into a whole new axle assembly. Two new differentials in less than a year is a little strange considering the truck has 35k miles. Thanks for the help on how to find revisions in advance.

It's entirely possible that the hard shift from 2nd to 3rd that you describe as enough to drop the driveline could have contributed to the diff failures.
The guys at the dealership told me that it is possible the hard shift is the reason this diff went bad too. But this is the second diff in less than a year. This cant be a good sign. Not to mention the tranny going at 35k miles. The first time my rear diff went every thing else was fine. Is there something thatcan be done, such as replace the truck? These problems are not good considering I am an ironworker and have to travel alot for work and need reliability. Again not bashing toyota, I love my truck I just want a solution for this IMO big problem.
i get this whine at or above 60 but it happens to go away when i take my foot off the pedal.. is this what u guys are experiencing? coz to me i falt/hoped it was normal (from the engine)

I would also worry what would happen after100,000 miles, but you have time after they replace tranny and diff!
