They are what other have said and here what they look like out of the wheels..
As for the grounding of a single wire concept in the 1gen, In the 2gen's the TPMS wiring and control units much more complicated and from what I seen during my research an it was just not worth the extra effort trying to bypass it from a electrical standpoint. The pipe bomb mod if so simple and works. Its is a true fact that they are now required to meet federal guidlines but as my tire guy mentioned its not a problem if you don't mind looking at the light on the dash its not a requirment to pass inspection for now.
Since I prefer not to see a light on my dash I opted for the simple solution.
Other have done similar by putting there TPMS sensors in a wheel barrel wheel but I just thought that was to big and would look odd.

You can use the below for $59
Strap your TPMS inside any wheels with these and just use regular valve stems ... I guess you would strap them on the opposite side as the one you are putting air in to balance them.
One great thing about these is your system still actually works like is was supposed to.
You could I guess interchange them with other wheels if you use a summer and winter set of rims.

I saw something similar but I just didn't want to worry about anythign coming loose in the tire and then it would more than likely damage the sensors and end up costing more money to get new ones and get the dealer to program in new serial numbers again.
Then again if I wanted to just retain its use I could of also just put the stock TPMS units into the new wheels but I opted to rather not worry about them long term any more this way and if they do fail. I am sure its a matter of time before they do fail in a few years since my understanding is they have a small battery in each one of them that will eventually die then you have to pay to break down all your tires to try and find out which unit is bad and replace it and have the dealer program in the new one again. Now if it fails I just cut open my pipe and find the bad one and replace, deler reprogram and put it into a new pipe. So much simplier in the long run I think. But then again to each there own.
Re: TPMS DIY bypass completed and tested with PICS.
I put them all in my "spare", works great.

One other ideal is to pull out the instrument cluster and find the bulb for the tpms light and remove it. It couldn't take more then half an hour, just my two cents.

Unless you need to use your spare.

Or even easier than that is to get a small piece of black electrical tape and place it on the clear plastic over where that light lights up. Looks like its not even there because it blends in with the black background.

Well that would be the easier method and cost the less.

unless what I suggested works w/o tripping the light, the solution that is so obvious but nobody tried it yet. it would only take less than 5 minutes (half of which would be sipping the beer) to pull the plug from the module.

It would be a real simple fix for sure but I think its more compliated than you think, after looking at a few schematics and module location. It looks like the module for the TPMS is just a antenna and reciever unit so unpluging it would yield the same result as it not seeing the TPMS units at all, it would seem the main brains of the TPMS is the actually ECU so it be more than just un plugging it I think. I may have missed something but thats just what it looks like to me from a quick peek. Now on another thought, I wonder what would happen if the ECU had the serial numbers deleted with the techstreem programer ?
I don't think any dealer would do this for us since there some legal bla bla bla to it all. Anyone work at a dealer and has access to a techstream programer care to check this out for us all. I know there is a few Toyota technicians on this forum.
