I'm just wondering if there might be an update as to the best way to replace a lost master key. I only have the valet key. I didn't even know about this stupid smart key thing. I figured I had plenty of spares, as I just went to the hardware store and had some made. I only figured it out when they wouldn't start the truck. I've read through the forums and only found I had to go to the dealer. But those were a few months old and I'm wondering if anyone has a better solution. I'd just assume pay for getting the whole system removed if possible so I could go back to the old fashioned way.
You can't really remove the system -- the system relies on the ECU and the key fobs to start the truck.
Plus whats silly about it is, you have to go to the dealer and ask for replacement keys -- expensive alright. But remember next time DON'T LOSE the keys! IMMERSE that in your head, please if you want to save yourself the grief of losing another pricey set of keys.
thanks for the response. It sure seems like a ripoff to me. Something like this should be an option. I understand where some folks would want this installed, but I don't need it. Its not a matter of if I'll lose my keys, its a matter of when.
but anyway...
my toyota stealer said the key is $150, plus $90 to program. I found the key on streetkeys.com for $30. Does that mean I can have that key programmed for $90, saving me about $120? I just want to make sure so I don't waste the $30.
Plus I guess getting another keyless entry is a whole other issue...I can live without that, though.
You have to have a master key to make another master key. The ECU can be reflashed but that means more labor. The key should be ~$50. Any more than that and you're getting ripped. You should have at least 2 master keys made. The labor should be the same no matter how many you have done. Then put away a master so this doesn't happen again. The system can't be removed and only a dealer can reflash your computer. The remotes are rediculously priced. I'd buy a remote from ebay or something. They say that they come with programming instructions but I don't know if they work or not. Worst case is to have your dealer program it for you which runs a pretty standard half hour labor.

How could you lose two keys? DId you have them on the same keyring? if so, well, dont do that...............
anyway, when you get the new key, tape it under the dash near the ignition. now use the keys you made at the hardware store.
you cant lose it if the key is in the truck, unless you also misplace your truck often.

thank for the lecture, dad. Great idea. In fact, I'll be sure to use extra heavy duty tape under the dash. Man, I hope I don't misplace this truck again. In fact, if anyone out there has seen yellow '78 chevy luv around, could you let me know? I haven't seen that truck for years...
Anyway, I only got 1 master key from the dealer, plus the valet key. At the time, I didn't even know what a valet key was. I figured I had 2 keys. I called the dealer and of course they don't have the other master key.
Also, I just tried the hardware store key with the valet key next to it. and it doesn't work. So if your going to be nob, at least give valid advice.
No problemo and just so you know, the valet key will do everything except lock and unlock the glove box.

some dealers might not want to program the key if you didnt buy them from them. i would check with your local dealer first .
Just be thankful that Toyota didn't give our Tundra the new car key (07+ Camry, 09+Corolla/Matrix, 08+Avalon, etc.). Those keys include the fob and key in one assembly. Those cost a dealership (including labor) over $300 to replace. I know because I am an accounting clerk and I handle a Toyota store. I see the expense reports and repair orders...they're not cheap.
Also, you were WAY overquoted on the $150 for a regular Tundra key. I'd say the $50 is a little on the conservative side...but you should be getting the key itself for at least half the price of what they quoted you. Also, $90 sounds like they're charging you a full hour labor. I'd shop around if there are multiple Toyota dealerships near you (as there are five in a relatively close distance to me).

Thanks! I called around and found a dealer that charges $55 for the keys and $90 to program them both. There's also some locksmiths that charge the same for the keys and $50 to program. Of course none are near me. I have 1 dealer 2 hours to the south and 1 2.5 hours to the east of me, so my choices are limited.

I'm glad you at least got some better prices on the keys...It does suck that you're so far away from the dealerships though. I guess I should feel lucky that I have at least half a dozen dealerships within an hour's drive...

No problem, here is another lecture.
When you spend thousands of dollars on a new truck, you should really know what comes with it. Like two master keys, and a valet.
What I told you should work, and I am almost positive I have seen it posted on this forum it does work. But, I can see how you may have messed it up. Complicated................
You have a nice day, and enjoy your new key when you get it.
