i just picked up a locking aluminum hitch by diversi-tech. when i put it into the stock tundra receiver i can move it 3/4 inch side to side and 1/2 inch up and down (measured at the hole where the ball will go). i measured the square part of the aluminum hitch and it measured 2 inches exactly. the truck seemed to be a little over 2 inches. is this normal? is it safe to tow like this?
I have several different receivers that I've tried and they all wobble around way too much IMO. I've never measured, but it's enough to cause a clunk if your not loaded perfectly. I use a Reese most often and it still has play in it.
I think they made the hitch a little bigger in that spot so that it could accept most any 2" receiver. Kind of silly.
Just FYI to those who may consider getting one of these and you have either an 05-09 Tacoma or 07-08 Tundra, the bolt is not long enough to allow the lock to be put on the other side. I called Softride and they said they are in R&D for a longer bolt for the newer Toyota trucks and it should be available in the next month or two. However, the guy also said as long as the lock washer is completely compressed, you can still use the hitch to it's full capacity.
i like that design but its made out of steel and i was looking for aluminum. the square hole in the stock tundra hitch measures 2 1/8 inch. i wonder why they made it so big. i can bet my hitch is going to flop around and make a ton of noise and drive me crazy when i tow with it.
The slop is perfectly normal...I just hammered in a cedar shim to shut it up when I'm unloaded. It still comes back out easily, and when I'm loaded with a trailer, it never makes a peep.

I think they made it a little bigger because if you leave the hitch in older recievers they will rust together and you have a hard time seperating them.
i have 2 ball mounts, and both of them rattle around inside the square tube on the hitch. i cant even stand having them in while not pulling anything. it drives me nuts

I think it might be an inch/metric issue. The receiver measures 55mm inside. That is about .165 clearance.

I use a powder coated Quiet Hitch with 4" drop, SS locking pin, and SS 2" ball. This combination works great, is quiet, and might last a bit without rusting! Here are the links.
