They apparently had talked to toyota technical and i think are having them look at it. I should know more later today (i hope).
Keep us posted on what your dealer comes up with. See if you can make "toyota technical" aware that many other Tundras have the same problem and replacing the driveshaft does not fix the problem.

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I'll surely keep everyone posted. As i've stated on the board in the past I bought a tundra in early 2007 and ended up having southeast toyota buy it back because of the clunk/thud. Then i got my current truck and it was fine for the first thousand miles or so and then the clunk appeared. On my current truck they replaced the torque converter (before the drive shaft TSB was issued) then they replaced the drive shaft which didn't do anything but make it worse and finally they greased the slip yoke. Now i'm starting over again I guess. I also told them to look into the shudder I get upon take off which i know others have posted about as well. My dealer has been accomodating thus far but i'm just not sure what else they can do or Toyota can tell them to do to get the issue(s) resolved.

Now, to me.

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I just returned from picking up my truck. Until i rode with the service manager they couldn't reproduce the clunk. When he drove and i was riding along i was able to point it out to him. Apparently he was looking for the clunk/thud a lot of us were/are experiencing when you come to a stop (which i had before they greased the slip yoke) but i also had the thud/clunk upon take off from a dead stop. The sensation as you come to a stop has not returned but the one when taking off has. He did feel it, said he has to talk to technical tomorrow morning and then he'll call me. He agrees it shouldn't be there and that it could be a design flaw in the drive shaft. It almost seems to him and I that if the slip yoke was religiously greased we may never feel any thing abnormal. My point is that shouldn't have to be done. I also noted to him that on my old 2001 tacoma the slip yoke had a grease zerk, on our new tundras, its a sealed (with a boot) unit with no zerk. Who knows..... As i told him, its not a major issue, i don't think the truck will leave me stranded but for a brand new truck, this should not be happening.

Exactly! In this day and age, we shouldn't be expected to live with something like this after dropping that kind of dough. What good is a truck equipped with a 381 HP boasting 5.7L, if everytime you take off it feels like the a$$ end is gonna drop out of it? I wish Toyota had a fix, so I could begin enjoying my truck.
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I have an '08 Crewmax that does the same thing. Took it to my dealer and they said it's a bushing for the Propeller Shaft! They asked me to wait for the first service interval before changing anything to see it it it goes away! So far the noise is not as bad but still there on take off. Keep at them until the problem is fixed, if they start giving you a hard time, it's time to make a phone call to Toyota Headquaters! They usually take issues pretty seriously as it affects their quality reporting for the fiscal year!
Heres the service Bulletin for the clunking.
Bulletin Number: TSB-0115-08
TOYOTA: REAR DRIVESHAFT/PROPELLER SHAFT CLUNK/THUNK NOISE. SOME OWNERS OF 4WD EQUIPPED 2007-2008 MODEL YEAR TUNDRA VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A CLUNK/THUNK NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE OR A BUMP-FROM BEHIND SENSATION
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
Had the arbitration hearing and don't think it went good (I'll have the results mailed to me, probably already there but on vacation)
Anyways, my plan was to drive around for an hour before I went there (since it happens when it's been driven for a while and warm weather outside) but I got stuck on a phone call and it was also very cold in the morning. The rep from Toyota only gave me an hour for the total hearing, just talking took 45 minutes and we drove for 10 minutes and my truck barely made the noise because it was so cold outside.
Left there and came to Arizona and it's warmer here and it's clunking pretty bad.
Oh Well, guess I have to live with it, unless my truck get's stolen.
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I have the same problem but my i have a 2wd truck is anybody having the same problem on a 2wd ? I took the truck to the dealer and they tollme that it was normal but i am taking it back monday this is b.s. Good luck to all of us!!!!
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
Just an addition to the clunkers club. I had my driveshaft replaced a few months ago according to the TSB but no improvements.

My 2wd is doing it also. Has anyone tried putting a poly transmission mount in to see if its tailshaft movement causing it?

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
Just a quick update for those interested. It took my dealer just over a month (which is ridiculous) to get back to me after numerous calls from me. Bottom line, they had a regional service rep inspect my truck Friday (1/9/09) and he/they think they have a theory as to why the clunk has returned for my truck. They told me that inside the drive shaft there is some sort of foam material and they "think" the grease they packed in there when they dropped the new driveshaft somehow leaked into the foam therefore there isn't enough grease in there now and that's why the binding/clunking has returned. I had no clue there is foam in there and don't know for sure because its just what i was told. They are ordering the grease and will be dropping the driveshaft again this coming Wednesday to do the same thing they've already done once.
I asked what's going to happen if this cures it again for a few months and then returns. I was told that's why they're looking into this, making notes and why the regional guy is involved so he can report to technical. That's all i know for now so we'll see what Wednesday brings....

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
i wonder why it wont thud when its cold. mine runs perfect when cold and if the temp goes to around 60 i can feel it again. keep us posted, hopefully they can resolve this issue for everyone that has it.
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
Mine does this too
I don't think this is a issue centered on the driveshaft at all. How/Why would foam inside a driveshaft cause a bind/clunk? And I call BS on the slip yoke needing to be lubed.
To me this problem feels like a problem with suspension loading on braking, the brake force holding that loaded suspension, and when pressure is released from the suspension (either from releasing the brake itself or from the jolt backwards after a complete stop) causing the bind.
Now I know the Tundra will engine brake when coming to a stop, thus the rotating force on the driveshaft is opposite as apposed to moving forward under power. This opposite rotational force combine with downward movement of the differential yoke and suspension loading when braking causes the binding. This would present a geometry problem as apposed to a driveshaft problem.
Many have had their driveshafts replaced per the TSP for this issue, and I haven't read of any driveshaft replacements that have fixed the problem. I think we need to head in a new direction with this. Toyota got the fix wrong the first time around.
I would like to test a solution that I think may correct the problem. Put a 5 degree angled wedge in between the spring pack and the axle (where a lift block would go) angling the differential yoke upwards slightly.
Any thoughts?
