Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I looked at past posts about this and downloaded the TSB, How do I get it to go away.
It clunks when stopping, and again when letting off the brake, every once in a while when almost stopping then going again it will almost feel like a slipping clutch then 10 feet later it made a HUGE clunk.
Took it to the dealer yesterday and they installed a new propeller shaft and now it's even worse.
I even had the shop foreman (Toyota of Orange) Orange County Ca. drive it and it did it a little bit, I then had him go with me, and I drove it a little more aggressivly and made it clunk a lot. He said don't drive it like that, and it's normal.
Everytime I take someone in my truck, they say they would have the dealer fix it especially since it's a new truck. I'm getting fustrated with it.
Is anyone out there that had a new propeller shaft installed and made it worse and got further work done.
PLEASE READ. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! !! ! !
I just got a call from the arbitration settlement program
Very nice lady who can set up arbitration for anyone in California or if not in Ca, can give you a number.
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
There was a thread on this specifically that some got their dealers to take apart the drive shaft and grease the slipjoint. Others had difficulty getting their dealers to do anything.
This is a classic problem on GMC driveshafts. I had to remove and grease my propeller shaft on my gmc a couple of times. It was much easier to do that driveshaft because it was a 1 piece aluminum driveshaft. You just had to mark the phase that it was attached and unbolt the ujoint from the rear diff and slide it out of the Tcase, thin coat of grease on the inside of propeller shaft and tcase output shaft.

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I am experiencing the same clunk/thud sensation. I have had 2 new driveshafts installed and the clunk is worse than before. Like 08HLLTD said, others had their dealers take apart their driveshaft and lube the propeller shaft which supposedly fixed the clunk. My dealer said Toyota will not authorize that action. Whatever. I don't know what to do now. I think I may go to the dealer and drive some other trucks and see if those do it too. I bet they don't.
I'm to the point where I am thinking about trading in my truck for another make. Toyota is doing nothing in my opinion about this problem.
Send me a PM and we can discuss it further. I see your local too.

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I'm going back to the dealer today with the TSB and the very last sentence says
" Test drive and confirm that NO abnormal vibrations or shudders occur while driving, and that the driveshaft clunk/thunk noise is ELIMINATED.
That wasn't even the main reason I took the truck in for, it would shake a little when braking (Ithought it was because I bumped a curb coming out of a parking lot)
They put on new pads and rotors, changed the driveshaft and rotated the almost worn out front tires (only 13,000 miles and most highway)
The bill was a little over $2,000 with my part being $19.95 for the rotation. I would think that for $1,300 in warranty they would have fixed the clunking.

I'm curious, how many other trucks out there have this disease? If you have a 4WD and you dont think you have it, slowly accelerate from a dead stop and feel for a clunk/thud sensation. It feels like the slack/play in the driveline is being taken up with the power from the motor. It should happen within the first 5-10 feet of motion.

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
Well I had my driveshaft replaced and they did grease the slip yoke and the thump is totally gone! so have them do it! But i do have a shudder when I accelerate from a dead stop in 1st and 2nd gear, and I did not have this before I took it in to the dealership! I am going to try a few things with the carrier bearing alignment. I will let you guys know!

Yeah, I've had my driveshaft replaced twice and the problem is still there. Do you have any details about how your dealer greased the slip yoke? I would like to try this myself if possible.
Thanks

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I had my drive shaft replaced when I complained about a clunk between lower gears when downshifting. I think I noticed the problem once since then, but I will have to keep an ear on it. Soon I am going back in to fix what I think is a bad hub. Hopefully I will get a chance to talk to my mechanic. I want to ask him what the procedure is when the clunk is still there.
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
Had my drive shaft replaced about a month ago..The mechanic, without being told, pulled the new drive shaft apart & greased the yoke..In the first week after replacement I felt a mild clunk twice...Since then smooth sailing...Haven't felt any clunk for 3 weeks..

Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
Guys that are experiencing the clunk noise need to consider the limited slip locking up as well. I have been told that was an issue on some trucks. Mine is a week old and has a very slight clunk noise. So did a bunch of my Chevy's.
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I also had to take mine back to the dealer for this clunk. You really don't feel it but you sure hear it. They greased the shaft and it did not help at all. It doesn't happen all the time so I wasn't really worried about it. Does anyone know what the long term effects from not taking any action?
I also had a problem with the front brakes shuddering when you brake hard. They had to turn down the rotors and then everthing was fine. BTW - I really don't drive it that hard and the truck has 20k miles on it. The only thing is that about 5k of those miles were pulling a boat so maybe that had something to do with it.
Re: Transmission Clunk, Driveshaft Thump, Worse After Propeller Shaft Replaced,
I bought my 08' 5.7 4X4 CM in Aug. 08. I test drove 4 trucks and decided on the SR5 model with TRD. Waiting for truck in detail and found out that they filled out the paper work for a different vin, same truck. Thought that it would be ok, but on my way home that night, about 9:45, started to feel a clunk at take off. Called them the next day to schedule an appt. and took it in for a TSB on the propellar shaft. They replaced but no fix. Took it back in the following day and test drove another as they said that all 4X4's did this. The others did not. They then said, after a ride along, that the transmission was bad and replaced. This also did not fix. They then asked that I bring it in and have the drive shaft pulled and greased since there was metal to metal only and that could be the cause. This was no help either. They now, supposedly, are getting one of the designers of the gen 2 Tundra to come down and take a look at it. I am in limbo to thinking that I may have a lemon since I have some buddies with the same truck but they do not have the problem. Wish they would not have screwed up the paperwork since the rest of the truck is great or could just fix the problem.
