I know I'm posting a lot guys, but this is a huge purchase for me. I always do my homework before buying anything...especially something this expensive that I'll have a long time!
I would really like to upgrade to the stock 20" wheel or the port 20" wheel. I am wondering if anyone with the TRD edition Tundra has done this. A few questions...
1. How does the truck ride with the 20" vs. the TRD 18" wheels? More or less comfortable? (This truck won't see any trails!)
2. Any difference in handling after adding the 20" wheels?
3. Will the tire pressure monitoring system still work with the 20" wheel?
I don't want to make a $3,000 mistake and have them put the 20" wheels on a TRD edition and it ride like crap. Hopefully ya'll can ease my concerns. Thanks!
a lot has to do with the choice of tires. if you go with street tires then even 20" won't be a problem. on the other hand, 18" with offroad tires may be harsh.
if you buy the truck already equipped with upgraded wheels from the dealer, then the sensors will work fine
There was just a pretty extensive thread about 18" vs 20" wheels on here - look at the last day or so. I'm actually buying a set of 20s for my TRD this weekend - how are you spending $3000 on this? Getting them new from Toyota or something?

I really wanted the 20" wheels, so I got a Limited with the TRD dual exhaust. That worked out real well for me, and should be great for you, too. Since you say you won't be trail driving, much less off-roading, the TRD suspension would be a waste of money.
As I understand it, Tundras with 20" wheels come with tires with a lower aspect ratio. That means the truck highth, the effective axle ratio and the speedometer remain unchanged.
I've been delighted with my 20s. You don't give up a pound of load capacity or towing capacity, and the ride seems as good or better as my '01 (1st Generation) Tundra.
BTW, if you get the optional 22" wheels, Toyota mates 'em with tires with a really low aspect ratio. That means much less towing and load carrying capacity.

With the feature set that I want, there are very, very few new 2008 Tundras left out there. The closest one that I have found is a TRD edition with the 18" TRD edition wheels. I prefer the 20" wheels and would rather have them.
I imagine that the dealer is gonna slap me with a $3,000 adder if I replace the stock 18" TRD wheels with the 20" ones. That is where I got that number. The port installed 20" wheels are almost $3,300 if you look at a sticker on a truck. I really want the stock 20" wheels.
My question was about the truck's suspension integrity and ride quality. The TRD package is an offroad package. I don't want to add the 20" wheels only to end up with a truck that looks great...but rides like crap on the highway. I will not be off roading. As mentioned, it is next to impossible to find the feature set that I'm looking for on an '08 and I don't want to spring for a 2009. Too much savings on the 2008s.

you still have plenty of sidewall meat on the 20's. so there is no reason your ride would suffer. my car has 22's, and i have 24's for the truck. i dont have a problem with the ride in either of them. and the sidewalls of those wheels are far smaller than the 20's you want to add.
anyway, if you dont wanna get boned by the dealer. you should be able to find a set of 20's on the forums here for sale. heck, ill sell you mine for $1000, with the TPMS sensors in them. you would just have to get the dealer to reprogram your truck, for my sensors.
My truck rides about the same with the 20" wheels as it did when it had the 18" TRD wheels. There's a bit less noise on the highway and you can feel more of a jolt when you hit potholes and such, but thats about it. The looks make it worth it!

Buy a set of used 20's for $1000 and sell your TRD's for $500. Your upgrade is now $500 instead of $3000. Work out a deal when you buy the truck to have the dealer reprogram or swap TPMS's as art of the purchase price.
Therein lies the fun of tracking down the parts you need on ebay, craigslist, etc. I've been looking for a few weeks now for a reasonably priced set of stock 20s, just found them, and will be driving about 4 hours (one way) on Saturday to go get them. It helps if you can wait to find the right deal that's within your limits of being reasonably close and affordable. There's nothing worse than being in a rush and ending up spending too much money, and then finding a better deal after it's too late. We've all been there. Now watch, I'll find those wheels for the same price in my own town on Sunday... That's why I'll stop looking for them!

I am getting a price tomorrow on a custom built 2008 with all of the options that I want...I can't wait to hear what they have to say. I know these dealers are anxious to make a sale!
