Be careful in your Tundra Crewmax with your sunroof open and the rear glass open about an inch or two. I was driving down the freeway about 75 miles per hour, all my side windows were rolled up, and my rear window was like I said about an inch or two open, adjusted to where the airflow through the cab has somewhat equalized, and gets nice and quiet. My sunroof open all the way, and in my rear view mirror I noticed the window moving or flexing from the wind. All of a sudden the rear glass shatters, and all the glass falls into the back seat. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I brought the truck to the dealership to see if they are going to cover this under warranty. Will update this thread with the outcome.
Update:
Halleluia!
Persistence pays off, after much bitching and moaning and arguing and debating physics, and two dealers later, they've finally agreed to cover the rear glass under warranty. I was beginning to forget the reasons why I bought this truck, but now its all coming back to me. They didn't give me a reason why they decided to fix it, just that they've agreed to cover it. I know for sure it went to the higher ups, and I think they were getting the point that I wasn't giving up. Happy Days in my Tundra again!

Wow, I am hoping you had no rear seat passengers that got showered with glass? I will have to remember this as I have car seats in my back seat.....Let us know what the dealer says because this is potentially very dangerous....
It will be interesting to see if anyone else chimes up. I am guessing though that not many have the necessary Tundra configuration and driving under similar conditions to duplicate the issue.....
I guess the short answer is leave the rear window all the way up or down...
You've already taken it to the dealership? NEXT TIME- First thing to do is take as many photos as you can from as many different angles as you can- showing especially the glass on the back seat. It would also help to go borrow someone's baby seat and install it and put some of the glass in it.. then take your photos. Take the photos to the dealership and go straight to the service manager and show him the photos. If they don't bust their asses to fix this, tell them your next stop with the photos is the local tv station. You were not operating the vehicle in an unusual or extraordinary manner and to the best of my knowledge there's no warning printed anywhere about this. The way I see it, this is a SAFETY ISSUE and should be addressed by Toyota immediately. If you had an infant in a car carrier, in the rearward facing position as they are supposed to be, the shattered glass could easily have caused blindness or worse, from ingestion. As a courtesy to every other CM owner, I'd call the national customer satisfaction line and alert them... offer to send them photos of glass in your baby's car seat and see what they say.

Hmm interesting I do the exact same as you with the sunroof open all the way usually and back glass cracked some about 2" so the turbulance not driving me nuts and I liek fresh air. and never noticed the rear glass flexing maybe I have to look in the rear view mirror closer from now on. Keep us posted on your findings from Toyota. Oh do you have a open cargo area or covered ? I thinking maybe if its not covered you may see more air flow issues perhaps but I would not think it be enough to shatter the rear glass.
Scenario #1. An errant pebble thrown from the tire of a truck in front of you. You get lucky enough to have it come at you with just the right trajectory to make it through the sunroof and into your back window.
Scenario #2. A kid with a Red Ryder BB gun...ok, so it would be something a bit more powerful, but you catch my drift.
I guess I could think of more but I just sayin', stranger things have happened.
Or maybe it happened exactly your way, but who really knows as of yet.
Edit: To add...whatever the cause, what a scary thing to have happen...bites hard.

I usually have my sunroof rear "popped-up" with my rear glass down about 2-3" and the glass does move in its channel somewhat, but like WT said, not enough to shatter, I wouldn't think!
Looks like there is some "play" in the window channels...I'll keep an eye on it myself from now on...thanks for the "heads-up"...B.
A friend of mine had a similar problem with the rear window shattering on his 07 crewmax. After a tedious investigation we realized it was probaly from the empty bottle of jack daniels he tossed in the backseat. Untill the next morning it was a mystery............
hi there is a thread that somehow the sunroof broke. being sucked into the cab. with the back window down. if i remember correctly.
i have a moonroof with also a full rear window that goes down. what i do when i open my moon roof is i move the rear window down than up until it stop's thats about 4"s open. to allow the flow of air from my front windows and moon roof to be open.
imagine the air pressure from windows maybe all 4 on a 05 double cab or 07+ crewmax, moonroof open pushing on the rear thin a$$ glass back window.
just something to think about. i thought of this when i bought it. so i always keep it down 4"s or more, when the moon roof is open. to be safe.
i can't belive it happened but , i'm thankfull for you no one was back there.

Here is my response to Toyota customer care's online survey they had the balls to send me.
I am disgusted with Toyota's response to the design flaw in my 2008, 44 thousand dollar Toyota Truck. The truck is still in what they call a warranty, that doesn't seem to cover problems with the truck during this period of time. I was relatively happy with truck other than the fragile paint job, until now. Toyota refuses to recognize that the glass is too thin used to manufacture the electric rear window. While driving down the highway with sunroof open, the side windows rolled up and the back window rolled down about an inch, the back windows flexes excessively, something I never gave much thought to, thinking Toyota surely designed the window strong enough for that never to be a problem. Boy was I wrong, when driving last Sunday with the windows and sunroof in the same configuration as mention above, when suddenly the back window shatters, and all the glass falls into the back seat. This is unacceptable. Toyota after calling your "customer care" about this issue, claims to have never had this happen before, when oddly I have found several instances where others have had this happen to them on their Tundra Trucks. Toyota refuses to cover this under warranty. I will never purchase another Toyota product as long as I live. Nor will my wife ever buy another Lexus product. Thanks Toyota "customer care" for taking care of this customer so well, you have lost me, and I will make sure no one I know will be persuaded to buy one of your products on my watch. Brian Cancienne 832-250-8314 Call me if "customer care" chooses to right this wrong.
To the OP: I don't see a post where you tell us what your dealer concluded from their investigation....can you update us? Also, can you please point me links where others have had this happen to them? I did a quick search but found nothing.
I was on the freeway this afternoon with sunroof and back window fully open (standard on nice days - it's 85 degrees here today!). I thought about your post and rolled up the back window to a couple inches open per your post. There was no movement of that big piece of glass at just over 80 mph. I told my daughter (who was in the front seat) to watch it and I took it to a little over 90....still solid as a rock.

Sorry too hear about this just fix it i think this just may have been a freak accident thinking about do you actually think they have both windows open when they tested these trucks. Most enlikely it was one or the other !
I have had a 06 DC and have drove with the sunroof all the way open and the rear window cracked a few inches for the past 3 years in all conditions with now problems what so ever. Recently got a new CrewMax LTD and still do this with no issues. Must just be a freak accident.

Dude, seriously....Come on.
We're in a bad enough economy right now, and we need people to work hard and EARN money to get out of this hole. Please stop spreading this litigative propaganda. For one, you're advocating FALSE litigation. Nobody was hurt, and you're instructions are to make it appear that a child was injured, or was potentially in danger. Beyond that, just do your best to NOT SUE other people. We're all hurting. Do your job, I'll do mine, and together let's help some others get their jobs back.
