Default How-To Source on Basic Wiring and Installing LEDs

I am looking for a how to source to help me install a couple of LEDs. I do not want to replace Lights with LEDs. I want to install LEDs in places that do not have lights. I also need a basic how to guid on auto wiring and what tools to use and what I need (for example how to find a specific wire, etc).

The LEDs I want to add is in the Cup holders on the dash of my 2008 CrewMax (Bench Seat). The cup holders are dark and I want them dimly lit. What I do not know is how to tap into a wire (even though I think I do) and how to find a wire that will run only when exterior lights are on. I may also install an LED, if I can find one that I like that, angles down and shines light down on my lower dash near the power plugs. I mount my phone there and I cannot see it well in the dark. I would want an LED which has a "hood" so the light does not shine straight out of the dash.

Many mods here talk about how to install lights in places, but most assume a basic level of electrical competence with a car that I do not have.

Any idea on sources of info.

Thanks

Jeff

Default Re: How-To Source on Basic Wiring and Installing LEDs

It's hard to really point to a single source. I would say start with Googling "Ohm's Law" to learn about the voltage, current, resistance relationship. Then try wikipedia for some info on LEDs and their basic characteristics. You will find LEDs need very low current to operate or they will burn, they also come in different voltage requirements. Using Ohm's law, you will understand how to limit the current these LEDs get using resistors. When you get all the basic info you need, you can look at this site: How to Wire/Connect LED's for some info on wiring series versus parallel.

Also, do a google search on "Voltage Regulator" in case you want to say, turn your 12V battery source into a regulated 5V source to use LEDs a little easier then using resistor networks.
