I've got a 2009 5.7L DC, My engine KNOCKING noise started shortly after 4000 miles. I discovered an oil leak from the timing chain cover and oil pan, that was repaired and soon after I started hearing the KNOCKING noise. I'm not here to BASH Toyota. I've owned Silverados all my life, I had the piston slap in my 1999 1500 and 2003 2500hd, this noise in the tundra is NOT piston slap! I've taken it to the dealer 3 times,,,, their finding, "cannot duplicate the engine knock", I filed a case with TMC, the case manager Monique at first was kind and sounded like she cared when she first talked to me, she set up an appointment with my local dealer, where I bought the truck (Valley Hi Toyota in Victorville). The Factory Rep was going to inspect the truck. I drove into the service drive and the engine was knocking, service writer and mechanic heard the engine knocking. The dealer kept the truck and did some testing (so they say), factory rep comes out the following day and "supposedly" does more testing, dealer calls me and says come pick up the truck, factory rep drove truck for 24 miles and "could not duplicate the noise". I drive truck home and the engine starts knocking again.
I have all this knocking on a video camera and recorded on a cassette tape, Toyota says the evidence I have is not good enough, factory rep needs to hear it in person. I told my worthless case manager at TMC which is now LIZETTE that the engine noise is still there and the service writer and mechanic her the engine knock the day I dropped it off, her response, that doesn't matter, the "Engineer, Factory Rep" couldn't duplicate the noise. I told her I wanted to start the arbitration process, she basically talked me out of that and offered me to take the truck to another dealer which is 40 miles away, I'm waiting for her call to let me know when I can drop it off to the other dealer.
I am very frustrated and disappointed with the LACK of customer service Toyota had provided me. I take very good care of my vehicle and I don't hot rod my vehicle, this KNOCKING noise happens at various times of the day, engine can be hot or cold, doesn't matter. Like I said, I'm not bashing the truck, I was very pleased with it until I started getting the run-a-round from the dealer and TMC. Where do I go to now?
One thought I have to toss out there is what oil are ya using? I have heard from a variety of people that the dealers are not putting the correct weight oil in, they use 10w-30 instead of the 0w(5w)-20. Too heavy of an oil is not a good thing either as it can not get into the really tight places a ligher oil can.
The other thing is the VVT has it own sounds, personality as it were.
2005 Rockwood 26' 5'er, Michelin LTX MS tires, 270 watts of solar on the roof, 4 T-105 golf cart batteries, Xentrex converter, Outback FX2012T inverter/charger.
If you can't take it with ya, why bother with an RV!

Gone but not forgotten~
Every Toyota truck that I have owned does this.... I havent read through all the posts on here yet, but I brought my first Toyota into a mechanic to look at the issue and he said everything was fine, but during the cold months to change to a different weight oil and it would quieten it down.... I cant remember if it ever bothered to do it though...
My engine noise happens after engine is warm and throughout the day. This noise is not constant, it comes and goes. The reason I posted this problem is to find out if owners are having the issue I'm having. Once again, it's not the noise at start up when engine is cold or in cold climate conditions as described by some posters. My engine noise started after the dealer repaired an oil leak at the oil pan and timing chain cover, mileage was 3700 miles when repair was done, now this engine knocking noise.
I didn't say that's what CAUSED the engine knocking noise, I said the noise started after the repair.
Maybe they installed different oil after the timing cover/oilpan leak fix?
I know someone mentioned oil earlier, and I totally agree that different oil viscosities could cause more "tapping" versus another..
I'd take it back to the dealer that did the work...personally

Thanks for your reply, I just got a call from TMC, they are sending the Regional Rep to the dealer and will meet with me to find out what this knocking noise is. Hopefully they can figure it out, don't know if the different weight in oil is causing this, it sounds like a rod knock, but it comes on for about 3 minutes then goes away and comes back after a few more miles of driving. There is no loss in power and there is no engine miss.
