Default Question About Adjusting Toe - Ideal specs

Hey guys, I had the tire shop do a free alignment inspection today while getting my tires rotated. Everything was pretty close, but the toe could be better.

Toyota's spec'd range is .04* - .18*

The left was at .05* and the right at .24*

Now I could go ahead and toe the right wheel out to match the left, but I was wondering whether .05* is really the ideal toe.

A little calculus tells me that to change the toe .19*, I would look for a 1.4mm change at the tire tread.

Thoughts?

For tire longevity in normal driving you want the toe-in (shown by a positive #) to be as close to zero as possible. So your .05 is good, I'd try to match that. You want a little cause it will be close to zero while rolling. As speed increases, so does the drag on the tires, this rolling resistance causes the tendency to toe-out.

Is your steering wheel straight?
Do you have any feathering on either front tire?
Sharp edge on the inside or outside of the tread?

Cool, I figured the smaller end of the range would be best in that sense.

I haven't really scrutinized it, but I believe it's pretty straight. I definitely had a little feathering on the outside edges, but that more a function of me chucking this thing into corners like it was a car. hahaha

Any clue on the rate of twist on the tierod? I guess I can just measure the tire and use my calculations. Basically, it should be equal to the tread radius times the sin of whatever change in angle I want. Going off my tires and a change of .19* I get 1.4mm at the tread. Are these alignment printouts in fractions of a degree or minutes?

If you are railing it, you may want to keep a bit more toe-in than stock reccomendations...say 0.1 to 0.15...you may like that way that feels in the hard corners better. (does hard right feel better than hard left right now?)

I don't know the twist rate, Toe is in Inches, Caster and Camber are in Degrees and Minutes.

This may help ya...
These are right off my alignment sheet from Toyota.
As you can see, the specs have a wide range.

Toyota's Specified Range (same both R and L)
-0deg30' to 1deg00'Camber
1deg55' to 3deg25' Caster
0.04in to 0.11in Toe
12deg00' to 13deg30' SAI
11deg30' to 14deg30' Included Angle

-0deg30' to 0deg30' Cross Camber
-odeg30' to 0deg30' Cross Caster
0.08in to 0.22in Total Toe

If you are anal like I am you will go out with a tape measure and keep adjusting until you get it as close to zero as possible while simultaneously centering the steering wheel. Doesn't cost you anything but your time.

Front Susp: Stock coilovers, 4" lift (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...6-4-inch-lift/), swapped extra spacers for Bilstein 5100s on lowest setting, wheel well height still 41.5." Rear Susp: ProComp ES3000 #326510 (2.25" taller than stock), 1.25" blocks plus PRG mini-pack (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...and-new-truck/) gives 2.25" total lift, parking brake cable bracket spacers, wheel well height 43." Front diff and rear ds drop; trailer hitch electrical harness tucked up above bumper. After 20K miles swapped 305/65/18 BFG AT for 285/75/18 Toyo AT, still on stock 18x8x60 offset TRD wheels, about 1/8" clearance to sway bar. Like the extra height but miss the width. Next time either 305/70/, 295/70, or 35x12.50/18. Added 5th 285/75/18 Toyo AT as spare. Bed Bounce: Stiffer E-tires are worse than stock P-metric; biggest improvement from PRG mini-pack, slight improvement from shocks. Still a stiff ride but tolerable now. Best things about this truck: 5.7 and transmission, interior size and comfort, very quiet at high speed. Worst things about this truck: bed bounce, no VSC in 4wd, mileage sucks above 70.

Daniel is right. a tape measure will get close enough that it will not wear tires. with two people put the tape across at the back of the tires as high as possible. check where you hook into the tread and where on the tread on the other side you make the reading, so you do the same on the front. also measure the height the tape will go across the back with out bending and measure the same on the front. i know the alignment machines measure in degrees but you want 1/16 inch toe in. (closer togeather at the front) the tires tend to pull out at the front at speed so toe in is what you want. sam
