There are a lot of different ideas about the best oil to use in the 5.7. I drive a 2008 4x4 DC with 15000 miles on it.
I understand the usage, towing, and ambient temps all come into play.
I want to get some feedback about synthetic oils, and change intervals for "normal" occasional light towing driving.
I am thinking Amsoil types oil may take a driver 10K or more to offset the price of the oil and filter.

Re: Synthetic Oil preferences for 5.7 4x4's Tundra
Not trying to hi-jack this thread.
I had a Tacoma and I ran Mobil 1 5w-30 but found cold starts (winter -10 degrees and below) were still hard. I'm interested in switching the new 2009 Tundra (<800 miles) to Mobil 1 0w-20 ASAP but I know you should not run synthetics during the break in period.
When is it safe to switch to synthetic?
Can I switch to Mobil 1 at the first oil change (~5k)?
Ok, back to the thread Personally, I would use Mobil 1; I know Amsoil is supposed to be the cats meow (as far as synthetic goes). I find Mobil 1 is more readily available. I (personally) also would not switch to synthetic to increase oil change intervals and save money; I would still follow the manufactorers suggested change intervals. If you want to buy synthetic to increase oil change intervals then I would consider a blend instead (which is cheaper) and still change at 5k. I buy synthetics to keep my trucks motor in tip top shape; not to extend oil change intervals. Just my two cents....
Re: Synthetic Oil preferences for 5.7 4x4's Tundra
Changed to Mobil 1 0W20 at the fist oil change (5000 miles), sometimes it is hard to find, I guess it's not common enough in my area, Advance Auto and NAPA usually carry it though.

Re: Synthetic Oil preferences for 5.7 4x4's Tundra
Mobil 1, 0W-20. I have used it for 2 summers towing in 110 degree heat. Truck has 37k miles and still runs as quiet as the day I brought it home. Change every 5k miles.
Re: Synthetic Oil preferences for 5.7 4x4's Tundra
Mobil1 5W-20 here. Anyone have any experience with the new Castrol full synthetic? Comes in a gold bottle. Syntec was less than full synthetic. The new stuff costs more than Mobil1. Wondering.....what's the deal?
