I think a gloss to match the head unit would be quite sharp. Is there a pint that would be a suitable match? Would a coat of clearcoat be a good idea?
Definitely would be concerned about chipping but if it is holding up that is great!
In order to do a gloss black like the head unit (commonly referred to as a piano gloss black look), you would have to first of all fill and sand that surface smooth. It has a semi-textured surface as is. You need a really flaw free surface to start. Gloss black will show minor imperfections like a magnifying glass. Then you'd want to shoot it with gloss black, and color sand it smooth, then clear coat gloss, and wet sand that and polish it. a lot of work. Also, not so sure it would be a great idea to have all of that high gloss black. Satin or Flat is probably better. Mine turned out to be similar to the sheen of the dashboard. I really wouldn't mind having the die transfer setup done on mine. It's pretty expensive, but might be worth doing.
From the pictures the Blue looks like a pretty good match to your exterior - it ties in very nicely. Good show!!

it came out just how i wanted.. THANKS for such a good write up GUTZ!!
it kinda subtle for now ....i think i'm going to look for a grey color similar to the top of the dash to spray the big trim piece.
i found a product called Total Prep that i used to clean the pieces.
i used the Krylon paint for plastics and did 2 coats. turned out perfect!!!!
the pics are bigger if you look in my album.

I finally mustered up the courage to do this mod. This weekend the sun finally came out and warmed things up enough to do some painting. This mod took about 10 hours total. I sanded off all the exsisting silver paint from all the gauge cluster, AC knobs, Shifter trim and window contol trim peices. Sanding took about 4 hours, I painted the main Guage trim peice, shifter trim and window control trim with Dupli-Color vinyl and fabric paint in flat black and I painted teh guage clusters, trim around the shifter, coin holder/towhual switch trim and AC knobs red in sam paint. I used 3 coats of adhesion promoter and 5 coats of each paint. I let dry 3-5 minuted between coats. and let dry overnight before re-installing.
This mod was well woth the effort and time!
Has anyone ever tried painting actual vinyl with this paint? I would like to paint the remaining trim peices (glove box, center console lid, and door trims) but I'm hesitant. I think I may go to the junk yard and try painting some vinyl first before I tackle my truck unless other users have had luck with it.

I did my dash and console pieces with krylon fusion satin black. I find it's the best matching paint in terms of texture and color when comparing the other black interior pieces.
