I decided to take the HC filter removal mod a step further...
I haven't smoothed the inside of the filter box lid yet, but decided to insulate the entire system up to the throttle body. I'll be adding reflective tape to the composite intake as time allows.
Pics of the process...
First, buy one of these...
Then glue some of this aluminum backed foam insulation to the air box parts as follows...
My wife asked if it was really necessary to work on a 1 week old truck with a HACKSAW!!

Smartest one in the family. Doubt if your "Mod" will make one itty bitty difference in you MPG. See if you can beat my 19.5-20 mpg on a stock truck with 40k miles.........

I give you credit for trying, but I don't think you're going to see a difference from insulating the airbox, as the plastic itself already does a good job of that.

Nice photos and nice work. Let us know if you see any mileage help.
Thanks for sharing with us.. Most of us appreciate your post.
Oh, by the way.. I get 45mpg towing a 5th wheel over Donner Pass..
(pssst .. I don't really get that sort of mileage ....)
As I am sure you know, it's really easy to come to Internet forum, and make any mileage claim you want. I am often convienced that we see the proof of that on this forum..so don't worry about trying to match the claimed mileage of some of those folks... Just give us some your experience. Good luck..

Good effort, however you saved more gas in the time it took you to make it by not driving it than you'll ever see with that. Wit all the cafe BS if a few bucks per car would give .25mpg better they'd have done it

I once got 54 mpg. It was a 5 mile trip from my house, down the mountain to the main road (coasting most of the way). Of course, hot footing it back up to the house, dropped it down to 14mpg, but what the he11, it looked pretty cool at the time .

Re: I decided to take the HC filter removal mod a step further...
Insulating the airbox can work to improve the efficiency a smidge, especially in hot weather.... it depends on the vehicle and how it is used.
A good example of something require insulation would be my 06 Suzuki King Quad. A big single cylinder engine hooked to a downdraft throttle body with the airbox mounted directly over it all.
Cut and pasted post below....
I took some air intake temperature readings yesterday. A sensor was installed to read temperture inside the air box right by the ECU's IAT sensor. With an ambient temperature of 74 degrees F (23 C), the IAT was consistently seeing temperatures averaging 8 degrees warmer. Higher speeds would lower things to 5 - 6 degrees warmer. Slow speed work and crawling could bump it up to almost 20 degrees over ambient.
Since the King runs noticably better in cooler weather, it would not hurt to make sure the engine is receiving air that is as cool as possible. Not only is it denser, but the ECU will be less likely to back off the already detuned timing curve.
Even though no data is provided, don't be so quick to dismiss this on the Tundra... until it (data) is. Ultimately it was found that the IAT on the Suzuki was heat soaking to even higher temps than the air was being heated to... What's a big Tundra seeing?
BTW, nice job.... bring data next time.
