I guess I'll have to do a search in these tailgate, I just assumed it was when yer loading a 4wheeler etc. So I could break this thing just sitting on it by myself?
I don't think it will bend from just you sitting on it unless you weigh like 350. I can tell you that once it starts to bend it will flex very obviously everytime you put a couple hundred pounds on it. This issue was fixed when Toyota redesigned the gate as shown above in the photos that someone posted.
My gate since it has already split apart at the seams will bend if I bounce on it by myself. I weigh 200 lbs. Imaging when I load a motorcycle that weighs 400 lbs + me on it 200 lbs = 600 lbs.

Good luck with your fight bud, but I have to tell you that this Tundra's body issues far exceed the tailgate alone. My truck is 2 years old (Yes I had my tailgate replaced) and the body of my 07 Tundra shows wear of that which a 10 year old truck would. Paint chips, dented body metals, interior plastics with the paint (yes paint) worn off, I am absolutely ashamed in Toyota and what they have done with the quality of their newer car/truck/and suv's. I was gonna replace my wifes 05 4Runner with a new Venza and have decided not to buy another Toyota till I see a change in the quality to the yotas of yesteryear. My truck IMO will not be worth chit when the 5 years of my loan is up, based on the premature physical wear and tear its exhibiting. Probably wont get chit for it on trade or sold outright, but I can tell you one thing........I wont be buying another Toyota truck!

Your gate was replaced by Toyota?? If yes do you have any proof, receipt or paperwork, or better yet can I record your VIN?? Did they charge you anything to replace it??

I have a 2008 and have noticed any issues with my tailgate, although I also don't load quads or motocycles onto the back of the truck. I have loaded a rather heavy riding lawmower a few times and I haul plywood, drywall, and lumber (2x4's , 2x6's, and 2 x 8's - PT wood) routinely. Since the bed is only 5' 5" long the tailgate is down and I load on top of a bed extender which puts most of the weight of the wood on the tailgate.
I am kind of worried that you are having paint issues outside and inside... Reminds me of my GM and Ford truck interiors...

What is the production date of your vehicle?? You can see it on the sticker inside the driver door jam.

The paint is as thin as the body metal. I have a hundred scratches on my bed above my gas fill from using gas cans in remote places. I always fuel carefully and have done this with every truck I have ever owned. Every time I wash this friggin truck I get sick to my stomach because I discover new body damage and wear. I also had my entire dash replaced earlier this spring (the warp thing) and on the new dash the paint seems to rub off faster than the old one. I love the drivetrain on this truck, but if the body (interior/exterior) wont hold up to the life of the drivetrain it will still just be junk when all is said and done with. Very upset with Toyota.....thats all I can say. And for a guy thats always been a strong advocate of Toyota vehicles that isn't good. My tune has changed a whole bunch in teh last 2 years when folks ask me how I like the Tundra.

Are you for real? I'm looking into buying a Tundra but you're scaring the hell out of me. I've always thought of the Tundra as the primo full sized pickup truck but this is dissapointing. Do I need to look more closely at GMC and Chevrolet?

You are discovering the joys of EPA mandated water based automotive paints. Not just Toyota suffering this issue, if it's made after 2006 or so it will have lousy paint inside and out.
Thank your government for that, Toyota and all the other manufacturers that build cars in this country have no choice in the matter.

I haven't had a bit of trouble with mine. I only have 32K on it, but it still rides and handles like new. Yes, it scratches easy. With the new Fed. mandated water base paint, they will ALL do that. Yes, the sheet metal is thin. I checked out a few other makes and so is theirs. I am SUPER happy with mine. I'm sure, like with anything, there are those out there that are having problems and/or don't feel that their purchase is living up to their expectations, but you will find that no matter what make you buy.
I am glad I bought the Tundra and if anything happened to this one, I would buy another one - same color of course

Thanks for setting this misunderstanding straight. Like he said its not just toyota but almost every vehicle manufacturer is in the same boat. There's enough bashing going on in the thread about the tailgate so lets try not to bash toyota about government mandated water based paint.

The paint issue is a pain I will admit, but due to regulations there is no getting around it. A buyer can mitigate the nuisance by avoiding darker colors. Although white and silver colored vehicles will still get the annoying scratches in the clear coat just like their darker counterparts, the lighter shade helps to hide them.
Re: So mad at Toyota I am having trouble typing!!!
C'mon guys, this isn't an EPA ordeal I am speaking of, I am speaking of cheaply made body parts, inside and out. I have a lot of friends with newish Dodge , Fords and GM's, and the body parts inside and out and are made of better more durable components. This truck was designed with a great powertrain and a suburban soccer mom body. I am not that hard on my truck, but it does get worked and from what I see, it was not designed to work. The truck performs very well, but I sure wish that teh body of my truck was made of more than 6 beer cans. I opened a buddies 07 Dodge tailgate a couple days ago to throw some stuff in his bed from mine and was amazed at how much more durable his gate/bed was than mine. I am not a Dodge fan (though I have owned a few) but it was night in day in the durability of materials used to make the body of his truck compared to my Tundra, lots more metal! Toyota did some things really right in building this Tundra, but they did some things soooo wrong! I would have been happy with a sacrifice or two in some areas for a couple better made things in others. and to think that I have looked at a few 09's and they havent done chit differently than in the 07, tells me they simply dont care! Times are changing in the auto industry, Toyota better get it together or more losses will be reported in their future, while some American based companies may be getting better.

Re: So mad at Toyota I am having trouble typing!!!
I was at the dealer once siting on the tail gate of a new 08 with my sone we sat down a thought that thing was going to break. I was dang near scared would hate to pay for a tin can tailgate it was creaking and stuff sad as to how toyota has become. They need to let japs come over here and make the tundra's or make them cross seas again !
Re: So mad at Toyota I am having trouble typing!!!
1: Remove your tailgate lock
2: visit dealer, take same color out for a test drive
3: Remove door lock from test drive tailgate, and put it into your tailgate
4: Switch tailgates
OK that's a bit extreme. Is it Toyota Corp that's doing this, or the dealer? I guess it's Toyota Corp.
The problem, (and this is for you, too AlaskaCub) is all the problems we have are common to the newer trucks. In an attempt to make a profit while selling for as little money as possible, they're cutting corners. Cheap interior parts, marginal electronic doo-dads, thin paint. Even if they have to replace a few things under warranty, it's cheaper than making the quality so good that no one will have a problem.
Check the Ford, Chevy, or Dodge Forums. They're complaining of the same sh!t, or slightly different, and Toyota knows that: just as many of us go back to the "domestics" they'll come to Toyota for the truck that changed it all.
