Ok, playing devil's advocate here.....your damage looks way worse than any I have seen before. I sort of understand why Toyota is giving you so much grief. I would think it would take a lot of weight to cause that severe of damage.

My gate was a lot worse and I had no problems with my dealer. They called Toyota while I was there and got an o.k. in less than 3 min. Mine was replaced at the end of 4-08 and I got the new gate.

I honestly dont think it takes much. When I noticed mine starting to come apart and they wouldnt do anything... I contemplated trying to "make" it come completely apart, but instead I have babied the thing. I guess i will never really be able to use the tailgate to load much of anything...I worry evey time I load something...knowing they will not fix this.

Hank I have that in favorates but would rather build one from a Tundra gate, I could than put center piece back in when not hauling camper. Tailgate would still have factory lines.

I was reading on their site that they have a convertible one now where you can put the center piece back in when not pulling. Not cheap, but then what is, better than reinventing the wheel. I have been eyeballing them but I would have to figure how to install the backup camera.
While I got your ear, what did you do to get the 5'er level when hooked up and still have clearance? Next how many inches do you have for clearance between the 5'er and the truck? The Rockwood uses a torsion suspension so moving the axles is out. I want no less than 6" spacing.

Re: So mad at Toyota I am having trouble typing!!!
I had 5&3/4 ins clearance to get my camper at4ins high in front When I took my last trip my tires started to rub the bottom of camper. I still have a warrenty on my camper so I took back to dealer and they changed the frame shackels and raised my camper 3 ins.I than raised it 1 more by putting spacers between spring and axel plate. This leveled camper perfect and I ended up with 6&3/4 ins clearance If they have a convertibe one now I may just go that route before winter I kind of liked their gate it locks and with the center panel it would be perfect. got to check this out.
Re: So mad at Toyota I am having trouble typing!!!
I have to wonder what kind of testing Toyota does with their trucks. They seem under-tested for American use. Check out the FJ Cruiser forums with the cracked/bulging front fender problem, which is on its third redesign, and still not fixed. The FJ's also blow out rear axles at a far too high frequency. Sometimes I think Toyota regards us as all a bunch of posers. A lot of Americans, though, really "use" their trucks as a truck, and our 4x4's as 4x4's, and expect truck durability.
Is that right, a 200 pound tailgate weight rating? That's pathetic. This is not a vehicle for a tailgate party. Does the new redesigned tailgate have a higher rating?

I don't have a clue what Toyota thinks of "us". But, I have noticed all new cars and trucks have much thinner/lighter metal in all areas. Toyota certainly isn't the only one.
I really use my Tundra - it's my everyday construction work-horse. But right from the day I bought it I saw the lighter gauge sheet metal used for the box and tail-gate. Consequently, I haven't expected it to be as tough as the box and tail-gate of the 1977 Ford that the Tundra replaced. So I don't throw heavy objects into the box. I don't drop heavy items on the tail-gate - or obviously over-load it.
Other than an 8 inch diameter dent on the wheel-well, which I plan on beating out from the under-side next time I have the wheel off, the box and old-style gate on my Tundra are still in pretty good shape for what I've put them through over the last 15 months.
Am I making excuses for Toyota? No. I could wish for heavier sheet metal in this truck. But then I'd probably have to bitch about the gas mileage I got - like I did with the Ford. (The Tundra gets twice what my Ford did.)
I've got a few years on this planet now. And I've bought lots of tools, equipment, firearms, and vehicles. Most all of them were never exactly as I wanted them. There have always been things that needed tweaking to get them right. There have been defects in some to correct. And then there were the design limitations that couldn't be corrected, only accepted.
I have adjusted my expectations and actions to the way the truck is. Some items I can tweak and make more comfortable. Some of it I have to live with. And you know what? I still really love my Tundra - even with it's flimsy, cheap-a$$ tail-gate. If I kill the gate I'll try and get a new one out of Toyota. If not, I'll buy another, stronger gate and move on with life.
I'm old enough to understand just how short a human life really is - even if one lives to old age. To get all worked-up over a truck, or a negative feature of a truck, seems pretty silly to me. Peace of heart, mind, and soul is the most valuable thing in life. I'm not about to throw that out the window over a flimsy piece of sheet metal.

Well said ArtM. Being another old fart, who owns his own pile of firearms, bought his fair share of trucks over the years also, I have to agree... just handle it..... handle it. Move on.
