Not rachet straps, light duty pull ones made by Ancra. I guess I have to clarify before that becomes a focus to blame this on too. There are 2, 6 mm holes more than 3 inches away and on the opposite side of the gate so don't even waste your time trying to conclude that this has anything to do with my gate failing.
There have been hundreds of people with no eyebolts that have had the EXACT failure in the EXACT way as mine.
I feel like I have to ask why so many people on this forum want to defend Toyota... in this instance?? I am not complaining about anything else Toyota am I? I love my truck. You people need to understand that this is nothing more than me pointing out an obvious problem with ALL of the 2007 and some early 2008 Tundras that Toyota is picking and choosing to either ignore or take care of on a per customer basis.
If everyone was being refused help from Toyota than I would not waste time here or anywhere for that matter. However, they have replaced hundreds of these pathetic excuses for tailgates and now are screwing with some customers?????
This is disgusting customer service and it needs to be made known that this is what you may...MAY... get from Toyota if you purchase one of their vehicles.
I would like to help make the process easier for other loyal Toyota customers that are suffering with the same old style tailgate.

I totally get your point and I'm not one to defend anyone who doesn't deserve defending. Crappy built tailgates, upgraded when it became clear that many people were having problems. It would appear that initially they even retrofitted the early failures with updated ones. You don't often get companies who improve on an initial design and then offer their next year's model improved components -- free of charge -- to the guys who bought the inferior previous year model.
I always thought that's how car companies worked: improve on last year's model so people will have a reason to trade up. Frankly I'm not surprised if Toyota decided that they won't replace defective tailgates in the '07 MY vehicles any more. They did it for a bunch of folks, now if your tailgate breaks, it is your problem.
It isn't defending or excusing, but looking at the cold hard facts: each tailgate costs Toyota x number of dollars, and they're losing money right now (as is everyone else) and they probably did a cost benefit analysis and realize that a few guys might get really pissed off and some of them might NEVER buy another Toyota, but overall, the cost of ongoing retrofitting tailgates isn't worth it.
It's a corporation, not a human being with conscience or pangs of guilt, and they'll probably ignore you unless they are given a very good reason to accommodate you.

I agree, hence I will have to give them a damn good reason to accomodate me then I guess.

Look, I know that the bolts are not the issue here. But the fact is that they will look for any reason they can to deny a claim. It is the nature of the beast. Curious, how many dealers have you tried?

I'm not saying that the tailgate failed because of the eye bolts. I was just wondering if it was one of the "reasons" Toyota was using.
I'm in his camp, Toyota should be held responsible for the bad tailgate design and he should get a new tailgate.

Re: So mad at Toyota I am having trouble typing!!!
im on my third tailgate and have given up! My current one is caving in from loading my motorcycle, the first 2 had seams that split on the side. Toyota tried to tell me that i should be removing the gate for loading....serious way to give me the finger.

Have Toyota give Honda a call. Perhaps they can help them with tailgate design. Not only does their tailgate open two ways, they advertise ATV loading across gate, and all this with one cable supporting the tailgate. Congrats Toyota, your the new GM.

I just never really consider the ridgline to be a truck, sort of like the subaru baja. Dont get me wrong i am sure it is a fine vehicle for what honda built it to do, but i wouldnt throw a yard of mulch in the back.

Maybe not but if you can actually load a quad or dirt bike in the back without the tailgate buckling, there's certainly something they've managed to do that has eluded Toyota.
Seriously, 3rd tailgate? Even the "beefed up" one they've been putting in the '08s and up?
Or are they just using up their old stock and putting those onto your truck?

Kind of what I was thinking...I've got the new tailgate (build date of 06/08) and I've loaded my 4wheeler in the back numerous times and the tailgate still looks new (except for the dented access panel).
Has anyone had the redesigned tailgate fail?

You make my point exactly. Now if I could load my ATV in my truck without removing the tailgate, I might feel my truck is changing it all or at least performing like my last truck. If you get a chance check out the Ridgelines tailgate and tell me it isn't substantially stronger then that of the Tundra. By the way I see you have a 95 T100 as I did. I loaded the same ATV I have now across that tailgate dozens of times without incident. But then the 95 T-100 was the last truck built in Japan. Perhaps thats what I am missing. I only hope I get the same +200,000 mile performance out of this Tundra.
