Default AIRBORNE... Results not as anticipated but Tundra Seriously ROCKS!!!

Went offroading on Friday and had an unanticipated incident on the way back..
I was with a couple of freinds who decided to go barbequing by the sea on Friday and dragged me along with them.. We went with my Truck (myself + 4 Passengers), my freinds 08 Hummer H2 (with 3 Passengers) and another freind's 08 Jeep Wrangler Sport with 2 passengers! (out of subject but that jeep got stuck every 2 mins on the sand dunes although he had his tires deflated to 10PSI!!! - Extremely disappointing; that Jeep has no power whatsoever!).. Anyways, took a different way back to civilization and came across 10Miles worth of flat.. It started of really smooth so i accelerated ahead reaching about 60-70MPH (i know pretty reckless of me but i had work the next morning and being 3am; i wasn't in my best of moods) until i saw 3 EXTREMELY HUGE holes in the ground.. trust me they were the biggest pot holes i have maybe ever seen in the desert; when i saw them, i knew something was gonna happen but it was too late to slow down; and with my tires on 15PSI, didnt wanna take the risk of turning quickly!!! - Truck hit the first one, second one, flew landed in the third hole and was thrown appx 100Ft away (airborne)!! ( Pictures attached ). - We were alright thankfully apart from one of the rear passengers who didnt have his seatbelt on and was thrown about injuring his back and head a little!!! Went out to check on the truck because i remember looking in the rearview after hitting the Second pothole and seeying things fly out of the bed (one for them being the SHI*** Armorbuilt Tonneau which caused the most cosmetic damage and fractured from nearly everyway from the load)

I honestly thought the truck was totalled when it came to a stop; the least i expected was major damage of suspension components and the Rods (with the negative camber and tow in on the front wheels) but was surprized to find out that i had just severly knocked the truck out of alignment!! - I also started getting major rattles and squeaking from the bed which seems to be twisted completely due to the Tonneau tearing off!!

One thing i would advise all is to stay away from armorbuilt tonneaus.. i thought it was a nice, light and cheap alternative to fiberglass hard covers but now its going to cost me more than what i would've paid for a TRD Tonneau granted i dont have frame damage!! - not to mention the amount of times it would open on the highway even when its locked!! Terrible product; probably the worst ive ever come across!!!

Check out the pictures (mind the front spare tire lol)

well i have an armorlid and wouldnt expect it to stay completely untouched after pulling that stunt. the damage to the back of the cab actually looks like the frame flexed enough for the bed and mounted brackets to damage it in addition to the armorlid hitting it. ive never had an issue with mine coming open or anything. i have even forgotten to lock it and it never came open. sorry yours sucked. mines been great. stand on it all the time to wash the truck. oh and if you think for a minute that a TRD or anyone elses fiberglass or other cover would have held up w/o damage, think again. that kind of abuse is gonna break alot. like your truck.

oh and you say the bed is completely twisted form the armorlid cover tearing off? uh doubtful that a plastic cover did that. our beds wiggle and frame isnt that strong to begin with so your bed doin the humpty dance is what screwed your truck up. glad no one is hurt and next time TAKE A VIDEO haha.

Glad to hear no one was hurt. If you ever feel the need to do a dramatic re-enactment, please bring a video camera.

LoL.. thats gonna be a little difficult being on the other side of the world but you can always try Moab, Utah.. thats fun too !

Come to think about it.. if someone was taking a Video it would've been something else.. i don't think stunts like the one i pulled are accepted in the Baja Rallys lol - Truck felt airborne forever having been inside!!

Regarding 07DCwhiteSR5's comment; im surprized you say that about the ArmorBuilt; mine kept opening ever since i got it (the shop installed it for me) but i checked the installation twice going by the instructions and everything seems installed correctly and within spec!! Im gonna try Truxedo.. atleast thats a proven brand i would trust!!

BTW; i got a call from the dealer and they told me truck's ready with nothing more than the 25 thou service cost (Thank god); apparently with the impact, the frame flexed causing the bed to slightly go off the mounts.. they re-alligned that and re-torqued the bolts n everything seemed normal upon test drive... Lets hope that was it!! Serious thumbs up to Toyota though; they have built a truck that exceeded my rigidity expectations by miles!! - If this were to happen in my previous F-350; i would've been parallized by now from the ride quality that truck offered if not rolled forwards due to how noseheavy that 7.3 Powerstroke was!! - God Bless Toyota

Here is a prime example of where our "weak" frame may have proven it's not so "weak"

Our frame is designed to flex just as it does in the ford propaganda video at silver creek. A thinner walled fully-boxed-frame with welded cross-members would likely have developed stress fractures in some of the welds, or possibly slight permanent deformations because of its extreme rigidity.

Wait, 25000 AED? Which equals about $6800 USD?

Is that correct?

VX: Don;t feel bad about the Armorbuilt purchase. I feel I made a mistake with the BakFlip2 I have on mine... The roll-n-lock cover I used to run is only marginally better. They all have their weaknesses and I doubt that many of them would have survived your journey without damage or falling off...

Glad you and everyone are OK and that the truck held up so well...

Exactly what the dude at the Dealership said; he told me that i was lucky to have the Trapezoidal frame and if this were a boxed frame i would've definately had frame damage with the impact!!!

N Rockstate; yes 25,000AED is appx $6800 (but thats for the UAE (Emarati Dirham) not Qatar), they are worth nearly the same but we use the QR (Qatari Rial).. If you thing i got the Tonneau for that much then you're mistaken lol.. it was for 2,500AED ($680).

Dakster; i'd have to agree with you, what pissed me off was the fact that ive been wanting a Tonneau for soo long and with less than a month of ownership, it gets completely destroyed and destroys the truck with it!! - I am sure if it was a Fiberglass cover it would've disintegrate too but i just wish it was a truxedo sport (what i initialy wanted).. Oh well; atleast we were okay n the Tundra handled it like a champ!!

BTW; even my cousin who is a hardcore GM fan and drives a 3500 dually was impressed; ofcourse he did say his 3500 would've walked out without a scratch lol but i didnt wanna get into an argument and just told him compare it with a 1500 (he smiled)!!!

Oh fhew, I thought your truck had $6800 in damage, not $680 in the truck cover.

I read the "25 thou service cost" as 25,000 as well as what it cost to fix the truck.

Hope that if you decide to fix it, it isn't too much.

at least you didnt have a ranch hand....you'd be nose dived into the dirt due to all its extra weight or flipped over the handlebars so to speak.

rock, dont try what he did. or if you do, take a video camera

back to my armorlid, guess im lucky. i installed mine by myself, its been off and on about 5 times, most of them done solo. paid 495 for mine. seals perfectly and never opened up. you have to latch it though. if you latch it theres no way for it to open. sometimes in the cold i do have to push down on it to get the locking "ear" thing to go under the metal plate and not over but thats just because of the weatherstripping. two buddies of mine got theirs too after i did and they havent had any issues. i am assuming we are talking armorlid even though you say armorbuilt, since thats whats in the sig and thats what its called.
