It seems like everyone just wants the bfg. When customers come in asking for it I ask them why, very rarely will someone give me an answer other than I like the way they look. Michilen is closing their BFG plant in Alabama due to lack of sales.
You can be certian this is because the economy sucks and OEs are needing less tires cause car sales are down so much. Nothing to do with the tire.

Henry,
I certainly hope you didn't think I was singling out just that one bfg tire line that caused their plant to shut down.
Can't completely blame it just on OE sales declines (while the economy isn't helping), bridgestone (largest tire mfg worldwide) is expanding plant capacities and building more retail stores.
You see more Goodyear stores closing than opening. I'm not too familiar with their silent armor series, the hp wranglers that came with my ram weren't much to speak of.

No not just less OE sales, but less people with money to blow modding thier vehicles with expensive tires also. people are just not spending money right now. so when the need to replace tires comes they go the cheaper route if they have to and lost of people have to.
"honey time for new tires on my truck, these BFG's are $1000 a set or i could get these pep boys specials for $400 a set, what should i do honey?" guess what tires he's not getting?
things closing are a sign of the times. What GM and Dodge in bancrupcy and closing 1000s of dealers means the vehicles sucked?

First I will let you know that I live in UT. Southern UT that is tho, so I dont see much snow. Imo in my situation down here for the type of terrain I drive my truck in, mud, sand, rock, and very little snow. I would with out a doubt get the Toyos'. But from what I have seen and been told about from people who live up north from me in Salt lake and the really snowy areas, get the bfg at's. They susposedly excel very well in the snow and ice because of they way that those tires are designed. Something that could help you a lot is if u probly went to a trusted tires sales shop in you area, exe. discount tire or like a costco, if you have one of those. And basically tell them what u told us. Also look to see what everyone else is driving around in your area.
Hope I could help.

Chrysler made poor quality cars (caliber, neon, stratus etc), plain and simple, I see it on a regular basis. GM was too spread out.
Pepboys is about to go under as well.
I wouldn't trust any employee of costco to be any real help in your decision making, however the guys at discount know what they're talking about.

ya i prettymuch can agree with that. i just say costco because they typically have quite competivie prices for really common tires around here.

One thing I've noticed with costco is they sell old tires, to put it in perspective, if we have a tire and the DOT registration is older than 4 years we send em back, guess who buys them? Costco. Rubber degrades over time, not looking to hear from people sayng theyve run on 9 year old tires. Nobody is saying they'll pop at the 5 year mark, they just lose their grip an integrity as it ages.

I appreciate all of the advice. The most popular tires around here are Cooper's, but they don't have a size I want. There are two major tire shops in town, one sells Cooper/BFG/Goodyear, the other one sells Toyo's. Of course each shop is going to tell me there product is the best. From the responses, it seems both BFG and Toyo are well liked by the folks that have them, so it's kinda of a coin toss. Both brands are within $100.00 of each other. I will probably go with the BFG unless someone tells me they've had both and Toyo's are much better. Thanks again for all of your help!
I would go with the Yokohama Geolander AT/S I put them on my wifes Pilot and they are great tires. They handled the 2 weeks of snow and ice we had last winter with ease, I was impressed with how well they did. I like to run MT's on my truck but I would go with The Yoko's if I went with AT's.

The General Grabber that someone mentioned is a very highly rated tire at tire rack. My wife's MDX has had them for about six weeks (since the snow stopped) and now it handles much better on them than the stock Michelin Cross-Terrains or whatever it came with.
