I need advice from folks on which tire to go with, the Toyo Open Country AT or the BFG All Terrain. The size would be 285/65/18 and since I live in Alaska, I'll be driving on snow and ice about 6 months of the year. I understand that both tires are more aggressive than the stock Rugged Trails, but I am looking for the one that gives best overall ride, least noise, good wear, and ice/snow traction. Thanks for your advice and help.
I've had the BFG AT's, but found them to hydroplane all too often. You should consider a set of Bridgestone Blizzak tires for winter snow/ice usage, but you'll have to run 275/60/18 to take advantage of them. You'll have to change them out seasonally.

I never really considered Goodyear since I had some Wranglers years ago on a Jeep and didn't like them. Are the Silent Armors a new design, are they really that good?
I'm on my third vehicle with BFG AT T/A KO's. These tires last at least 50,000 miles, are very good towing, very good on rocky / rutted roads, super strong sidewalls, quiet on the road, and good ride considering the E weight rating. I've found them to be excellent on snow, and I've never had anything any good on ice, unless it has studs. The problem is, studs worsen your performance on wet, dry, or snow. The T/A KO's do decent on ice, but not great. My F-I-L runs the Toyos on his F150. Not comfortable on bumpy roads, but that may be the truck. Also not so great in snow, but his truck doesn't have all the fancy doo-dads that prevent you going sideways that the Tundra has.

I've been debating the Goodyears and the Hankook RFM10s. I am gonna go with the Goodyears based on the fact that I can get them installed for 100 more bucks than the Hankooks b/c I can get the Goodyears on base.

The BFGs are quite expensive. That being said, when you look at pickup trucks around here, about 75% have them. Toyos are much less common. I'm not sure if they stand up to the abuse in marginal conditions, logging roads, etc. I could be wrong! And also for towing, I know their weight rating is available in C or E so they'll likely stand up to the load. tire rack doesn't have them, so you can't use their tire comparison chart. The rest are here: Consumer Survey Results By Category The BFG s #10 on the list and doesn't rate very good in wet, or hydroplaning resistance. On the other hand, it rates well in snow, deep snow, and treadwear. They don't ask how it does on rocky, rutted roads / offroad situations (such as you might encounter in Alaska)

It seems like everyone just wants the bfg. When customers come in asking for it I ask them why, very rarely will someone give me an answer other than I like the way they look.
Michilen is closing their BFG plant in Alabama due to lack of sales.
