Funny thing is that in California, reflective tint is now the law to HAVE on the car. All cars sold in CA by 2014 must have tint all around, even on the front windshield. The thought is that if the car is sooler people will use A/C less and get better mileage. I don't know about you all, but down here Tint makes the car bearable to be in with the A/C on...
Here it seesms to depend on the level of tint you apply as far as the cops pulling you over and maybe if you are some kid acting stupid in a ricer car with some loud exhaust, that increases your odds.
I would like to get my fronts tinted. But would like to go a notch or so less then the rear window glass on my DC, what % of tint would that be?

Alright, I'm fixin to tint the windows, there's a tint that has some metalic flakes that reflects the heat better. Actually pretty impressive, they have a heat lamp and a sliding piece of glass, half with 3m the other half with the heat reflective tint. It's a pretty substantial difference. The problem is they said with my truck being black the glass may pop as it gets extremely hot vs regular tint and having a black veh makes it worse.
Anyone hear of this?
Thanks
Seems kind of strange that they would advertise a tint then tell you not to get it. What's the point of that. I had a car tinted a while ago and got it pretty dark and it had a metallic finish. I believe the coating was nickel but not sure. My parents got theirs done at the same shop after I did mine. They used a much lighter shade but it was the same nickel type plating. You could hardly tell the windows were tinted but it did the job. Point is I would bet you can talk to your local tint guy, pick the shading you want and still get just as much UV and heat protection from varying shades. Not to mention better gas mileage since the AC doesn't have to run as much with tinted windows. So really, your doing it to save money.

Building windows have a coating on them that barely darken them but reflect most of the heat. so the technology is there. But since it doesn't darken much, would people buy it? Sounds like that making the A/C work easier is not the main goal.

Yes, some buildings have a coating on them but I think a lot of the commercial and residential applications use double panes and low E gas between the panes. I think it's argon gas but not sure about that. I like the darker tint on my vehicle as well but it can be hard to see out of at night if they are really dark. Not to mention if you get the occasional cop who is just looking for an excuse to pull people over, that may be all the reason he needs. I would still be willing to bet that there are lots of people who like the benefits of reduced heat and UV damage without the negative aspects that darker tint can have.
While double panes and gas filled cavities help, they apply a coating on the glass that does the light reflection and also limits heat flow, this could be on a mylar sheet instead of a dark color.

I put our tint reader on my rear window today and it's 20% and I can't for the life of me remember what the front was. Our windows are smoked in the front so a 30-35% tint in the front will bring it to 20% or so.
I don't know how a darker front and lighter rear would look.

Thanks man, I was thinking I would like mine to be a little bit lighter in the front than the stock rears in a DC. So with what you said I'm thinking by adding about a 35%-40% tint to the fronts may achieve that.

Chespskate, I don't do anything to save money. I keep my ac on full blast am or pm pretty much 9 months out of the year, 2 months I roll the windows down and 1 month have the heater on. I just don't like it being hot as hell when I get in.
Henry
Yeah sounds about right, I'm now even thinking about tinting the rear windshield as well.

madico is pretty good. 3m in general is good, they've got different grades of course. Not sure about the other one you mentioned. Did you call and make sure the place you are going to has both options.

Interesting note, here in FL you can tint any window to any darkness, except 2 front windows (drivers door and passenger side front door - max 20%). Windshield is illegal to tint.
Anyways, I tinted my sequoia 5% all around, front doors 10% and windshield 50%. I got ticket 3 years ago (2 days after that tint job) = $74.50 (illegal sun screen in FL)
I drove in my sequoia all the way up to Boston, NYC, and trough out east coast. I've been pulled over for minor things, but never for my tint. I even drove round trip from FL - NY - AK - FL and not even a single leo pulled me over for tint.
North Carolina during day
Yellowstone National Park (Those wheels on my Tundra now)

I have 20% Johnson window film on my tundra. I never had the tint checked with a tint meter to be exact. I do have trouble at night trying to see out of it. I'm thinking about removing the tint on the front window and installing Llumar 35% on the front instead. Had 20% installed on the back sliding rear window over the factory tint. So that % is 10% total. I did the rear because I was tired of the headlight glare and the truck didn't come with an auto dimming rearview mirror. But it makes it difficult to see out of the truck when backing up a night.
I have 35% Llumar all the way around on my 300M. I had it checked with a tint meter and it came back 25% Visible light transmission. But I'm not sure if that tint meter is that accurate. But the car didn't pass WV inspection if I wanted to move there which I have no desire to move there. I have no trouble whatsoever trying to see out of the car day or nights. Not too dark and it looks classy in my opinion. paid $239 lifetime warranty
If my truck didn't have factory tint I would do 20% on the back 3 and 35% on the front 2. Forget the eyebrow tint strip.

Llumar is a good product. I had it on my Matrix for 6 years now... still look good like the first day... I had 3M on some of my previous vehicles.... I think Llumar has better visibility from inside than the 3M. Overall, I like Llumar than 3M. If you can get the Llumar ( a little pricey ).. get it.
