First off, sorry if this has been covered, but I just spent over an hr looking, and couldn't find what I wanted.
Can a person load up a can-am outlander in the back of their dc with the tailgate closed? I really looking at buying the outlander max 800, but I'd need to be able to haul it with the tail gate closed a couple times a year.
Or would it be easier to just remove the tailgate?
alaskacub huals his atv with the gate closed on a standard bed, not sure of the length compared to the can-am.
He used shop ramps (the ones for changing oil) to raise the front, that was just enough to get the gate closed.
Search his threads, he had pics.

Here's the problem with driving around with the tailgate open. About 3-5 times a year, I'm planning on going camping/quading. My travel trailer is light enough that I'm not too worried about being overloaded. However, with the hitch I have, I can't completely lower my tailgate when I am hooked up to the trailer. Therefor I need to figure out how to close the tailgate. Or I guess I could just scrap my current box cover, and order the diamondback cover.
The rest of the time it's not an issue, as I have a nice little enclosed trailer that the quad will travel in.
I have a suzuki eiger 400 which is 85.6 inches long an a DC. I cannot close the tailgate. I have tried Alaskacub's technique with car ramps and still cannot close the tailgate not to mention it puts the quad dangerously close to the rear window. Since my tires all sit in the bed, I partially close the gate and hold it shut with straps. My only concern has been tailgate failure and now that the waranty is up I no longer load the ATV, I will buy a trailer.
I researched this pretty extensively before I bought a DC last year. At the time, the only 4X4 ATVs I could find that would fit into the DC bed with the tailgate closed (the short one; couldn't get a long bed because I wanted a Limited) were the Polaris Sportsmans 350 and 400. I bought the 400 and it feels like a (fragile) toy compared to my Yamaha Kodiak 400. But, it does fit with the gate closed and no other mods. I don't think I would buy it again and I use it sparingly, relying on the Yamaha when I want to get back from where I went.
Here's a thought....what about removing the tailgate, buy a piece of 8 feet 3/4 to 1 inch thick plywood, lay it in the bed, and cut a hole out where it would hit your trailer hitch.....???

Just read about the trailer, the guard dog won't work.
What you can try is tilting the 4wheeler, ie block the front of the bed with lumber about 1-2 feet high, roll the front tires up onto it, that'll reduce the space it'll take up. Not great but it could work.
I seem to remember someone on a dodge site that had two stacked sideways on top of the bed. Don't remember the structural setup though.

An outlander Max will only fit in a long box truck. Are you getting a 2010 max with power steering or a 2009 without ?
I would say your idea of using a diamondback Is your best bet. This is what i use to haul my quad and tow my TT behind. I also see you are Fort mac so i would recommend if you are looking for a diamondback cover call Rapid Revolutions in Edmonton As he will be the best price for the cover or anything else for your ATV or truck. I think the number is 780 455 7553 ask for Kevin.
