Built myself a custom box today (pics)*Updated design*
Hey guys, I had been wanting to build myself a box for a while now. I had the day off So I decided to build a box.
It came out well and bumps pretty nice. I do want to ditch the amp Im using to drive it. Its a Urban 300 watt. I got it for free. Any ideas on what is a good amp to drive this sub these days? I think a 600 watt amp would be better right?
Im using a Premier® TS-SW1001S2|S4 10" Shallow-Mount Subwoofer with 1200 Watts
I used some 3/4 MDF board screwed glued and nailed.
Ported

Very nice!!! I recently made myself a custom box also. Do you have any pics of it half finished?

No I was just wondering what the inside of your box looked like. I know, that sentence sounds wrong. I already built mine. Yours looks good and it looks like it fits perfect. Great job.

Alright if you really want me to..... I hope I don't get banned.
These are not as fancy as yours but they fit great. I wanted to make these bigger than the manufactures specs so I had to build a little dead space in the back so they would stand.
I had to turn both of these to face toward the seats. They vibrated something, either the jack cover or the side walls and sounded horrible. They sound much better since I turned them.

if your "port" is a just a hole in your box, with nothing else. thats not a port. just a REALLY REALLY bad leak. ports are EXTREMELY complicated to build if you want them exact. trust me.

Its not just a hole. I just took a guess at the baffles inside. I guess I did ok beacuase it sounds good on all kinds of music that I tryed so far. You can see them if you look at the screw locations.
here is kinda what the baffles look like.

Thanks man, yeah the first one took a little time because it was my first one. The second one took less than half the time the first one did.And they are at least twice as loud as my old ones that these replaced.

Is that what the inside looks like? If it sounds good, that's all that matters. I don't know if you're "allowed" to have that open area at the top right part of the picture because of bouncing waves or something like that. But like I said, if it sounds good then great job. It is awesome work. What size sub is that? Mine are tens.

Box looks great... kinda like mine. Except mine's sealed and I was putting it together so fast that it ended up as a downfire. LOL.
I was surprised to see your port that way too. But if it sounds good, you did something right. Most ports i've seen tend to have a channel/wall. Here's what I would have done... don't know if it's right but I think it'll be cool for the rear passanger to get air blown at their feet.

Ports without tubing actually work very well due to their low loss (the air friction caused by a longer port tube can hurt the efficiency of the port). This type of port is harder to design due to lack of ability to tune properly - once you cut it too big, it's over. When I build a ported box, I always look at the impedance curve to tune it the way I want. You'd be surprised at how far off the manufacturer's thiele/small specs actually are for a given driver. If they're not accurate, don't bother building the box according to the instructions given by the manufacturer - it won't sound right without tuning it afterwards.
The OP's box is actually more of a 1/4 wave transmission line than a ported box.
I really like those shallow pioneer drivers

thanks for the comments on the box. I am in no way a custom box builer. Im just a carpenter by trade.
After listening to the box a little more today I think I may need a larger Quality amp to power it. I dont think the 300 watt Urban amp is up to the task. I bet the 300 watts it says on it is at 2 ohms. I bet im only getting 100 watts max to the sub. I got the amp for free.

That's very clean work!
If you're bridging the amp into a 4 ohm load, you'll get the 2 Ohms per channel power output, but being the brand of amp it is, you're probably right about the enthusiastic power rating. I wouldn't go with anything less than 400 watts RMS on that woofer.
One way to roughly tell the power output potential of an amplifier is to look at the power fuse rating - if your amp really is a 300W amp (which I highly doubt), the fuse rating should be a minimum of 40 amps (12 volts x 40 amps = 480 watts times 60% efficiency typical for a class AB output circuit = 300 watts)

I suppose if the port was short enough and large enough, the enclosure would basically become an open baffle type, for which there is less booming and moaning in the bass. On that note, what do you call a ported box design with an excessive peak in the bass output at 100 Hz? ..... Magnaflow.
