I was looking at getting a new tundra, and was confused about the towing capacities. I was thinking they were al rated at 10k, but it looks like they aren’t. Maybe I’m reading this wrong, but it says all the TRD off road tundra’s have the off road package and should be rated at just over 10k for towing, but at the local dealer I look at the sticker and it actually says only 8300 (only lol). The limited with the towing package next to it was rated at 10300, but also carried a sticker 7k more. Am I missing something here?
The Tundra is rated at 10,000 or over WITH the towing package and the 5.7 V8. If either of those is missing so is the higher tow rating. After that variances between 10,000 and 10,600 would be the weight of the truck differences; my DCLB is rated at 10,300 I believe I would gain a one or two hundred pounds of towing capacity with the shorter bed being it is lighter.
The SR5 package contains the tow package. The rest of the SR5 package has nothing to do with towing.
Ok. I think I may have been confusing the SR5 package with the trd package. I was confused when I saw a TRD off road at the dealer and it was only rated at 8300..
I thought it was kind of strange. It says in the brochure that the towing package adds anywhere from 1500-2000 pounds to the towing rating. Also what I don't understand, is the towing package also doesn't seem to add anything as far as the suspension. Same springs etc...
I have the "Tundra Grade" with 5.7 Double Cab (which is the cheapest of all models, below SR5) but it has the optional "Tow Package", it was a $600 option and mine is rated at over 10,000 lbs ... so it doesnt matter what model you get as long as it has the "Towing Package" ... It included Trans temp guage, trans Cooler, Heavy duty battery, Trailer Wiring outlet's, Tow Hitch, 4.30 Gears versus the 4.10's you get without the Tow Pkg, alot of bang for $600 I thought on a "Tundra Grade" for only $600 ... Also the hitches from the Factory are welded into the frame ends so that might give it a little extra versus a bolt on.
Don't let them bs you into adding a hitch to a non tow pkg truck, because they arent the same, you want to tow make sure you get the "Tow package" and its on the "Window Sticker" from the factory, not some add on they have added.

Thats good info. I'll make sure it has that package. Thanks
