I have a 2007 chevy sivlerado 2500 hd with the duramax turbo diesel in it. It runs great, but i dont really need the power that I used now that I changed jobs. I am looking to be able to tow a max of around 7-8k sometimes. I really have my mind set on the 5.7 ltr but and wondering if the the new 4.6 will do the job. I tow about 7-8k max but this is rarely. More in the range of 4-5k. Price wise I can get a great price on a 2010 4.6ltr with the SR5 package and included is big tow and cold weather options and some other minors. I would fit the bill perfectly except a little worried about the motor on the 4.6 and towing capacities. I live in colorado so we do have to drive up some pretty steep climbs with the weight I am talking about. Problem is it is very had to find a 5.7 SR5 package around colorado except for the limited's which are way out of my price range. I cant seem to find a 5.7 with just the 4x4 and SR5 anywhere. So what do you do guys think? Is the 5.7 really that much worth it? I can get a brand new 4x4 SR5 with big tow on a D cab 39 miles for about $2k difference in trade in. Msrp is 32,xxxk but the are will to do a little under 30k. Sorry for the long post! I am just really looking at getting a newer tundra and want the 5.7 but and trying to figure out if the 4.6 will fit the bill. Thanks in advance for all responses!
If you are going to tow anything substantial, you will be glad to have the 5.7 - especially if you live in higher elevations. The power drop you encounter from the thinner air can be substantial. You also have the option (although not a cheap one) to get the TRD supercharger, which can really really help you with the higher altitudes.

Thanks for the tip! I think if I started thinking about SCs then I would def just try and find a 5.7. I guess my question is how does the 4.6 compare. Towing wise and MPG. If its not a huge difference then maybe the 4.6 will do the trick and I can save some cash and get a good deal on one they have in stock now with how much they will show me for my truck!
The 5.7 is rated to tow roughly 2k more than the 4.6. (about 8k vs 10k on 4x4s with tow package). The 4.6 is rated at 2 mpg better, but yet to see for sure.
You'll be near the limit with the 4.6, so even if you don't tow often you be much happier with the 5.7 when you are.
Also the extra 1-2k you spend for the 5.7 will carry itself in the resale/trade value of the truck for the next 4-7 years, assuming gas prices don't get stupid.
Best of all it's nice to have a truck that can accelorate like a sports car..... "in case" you ever need to.
post a vin# if you'd like and I can tell you invoice pricing.

I towed in the 7,000 lbs range with the 4.7 which had almost 75HP less (torque is about the same) than the 4.6 and this was with a 4 spd tranny vs the 6 spd today, most of the time it did very well, the mountains were the biggest challenge just the same it handled it. I don't believe the mountains would have been as big of an issue with a 6 spd tranny.
I think the 4.6 will fill the bill for what you are doing, even with the occasional 6-8k pulling, thanks to better gearing in the differential and tranny. Should you want just a little more grunt down the road toss a set of headers on and pump the torque up about 40+ lbs.
Not to say that if you tripped over a 5.7 you should't grab it!

If you can't take it with ya, why bother with an RV!

Thanks everybody! I actually picked up a 2007 5.7 TRD DC yesterday It has 32k miles on it, a Magnaflow dual exhaust, and a Prodigy Trailer Brake. Other than that it is pretty much stock. So far I really like it a lot. It has ton of power. So glad to be a Toyota owner and be here
You'll like it, the first week I had it I constantly mashed the pedal. Had a run in with a duracrap, he cut me off when I was trying to merge on 410 (he was behind me merging crossed the line and sped up so I couldn't get on) after I blew by him with the horn blasting I slowed down to 70, let him come screaming up to me then I just went WOT, did that once more (even missed my exit LOL). It's amazing the power this truck still has from 60-90. And it's smooth, I'll drive I10 east and the limit there is 80 and most people go 80-90. It was an ok ride in my dodge but can't compare to the tundra.
Enjoy the truck.
