Default Truck Rolled Backwards In Park - 4 low?

I was taking my boat out of the water and had the truck in 4 low. When I was well out of the launch area, I stopped as I normally do to plug the trailer lights, put tie downs and secure the outboard. When I tried to put truck in 2wd all I got was blinking lights and beeping. Not being too concerned about that at the time, I put the truck in park and shut it off. Much to my surprise while I was putting the tie downs, the truck started rolling backwards! I thought I may have forgot it in neutral because of the problem with going from 4 low. That was not the case. It was in park. Guess I should always put the parking brake on.

I wasn't on much of an incline at the time and was far enough away from everything else at the marina so that nothing bad happened as a result. But it was very 'Scary' to say the least.

Yup...I agree w/everyone else that you put your truck in park prematurely. The transfer case was in neutral.

Yup, the transfer case can be picky in these things. We were hunting last fall and spent some time in 4-lo on the old narrow logging roads. At one point I went to switch back into 4-hi and managed to do something the truck wasn't happy with. Ended up with lots of dinging noise and a t-case in neutral that wouldn't do anything. Trouble was we were sitting at the edge of a pretty nasty drop and no way to move the truck. Played around with every combination I could think of to get the t-case to re-engage but nothing worked. Ended up shutting everything down and when I started it back up the tranny went right into 2-hi. Sometimes I miss my old manual t-case

FWIW - I also always set the E-brake when playing around with the trailer.

i dont get why you would put it in 4-lo just to pull a boat out of the water

Depends on what kind of ramp your on and what angle the ramp is. My pontoon boat is pretty heavy and the sand ramps around here need 4 lo to get it out of the water.

Not to mention can be super slick...

Mine did the same thing when I was trying out 4WD...I put it in 4H first, and it seemed to work fine... but when I put it in 4L, I got the dinging and lights flashing... I put it in park..then reverse(trying to get the transfer case to lock in), but had no luck... So I put it back in D and it just sat and revved... I then put it back in 4H and drove it forward slightly, and tried 4L again, this time it actually went into low range, but the lights were flashing and it didn't feel like 4WD in the steering... as I drove forward and it tried to shift it acted like it got disengaged and sat and revved... all of which was on level ground...

I've been meaning to try it again to see if it indeed has an issue, although I'm do for an oil change, so I'll just have the dealer look into it...

Ive got to look at my owners manual, BUT, I have to put my transmission in neutral or be moving in order to shift into 4HI, then fully stopped, tranny in neutral to get into 4lo. That being said, ive not had any problems shifting into 4wd!

the electronic 4WD switch is funny on these trucks. I had the same problem with my 07 Tacoma 6 spd. Just takes some tinkering.

Back in 07, a member lost his Tundra while pulling his boat from the water. He left the engine running, left the transmission in gear, got out of the truck and did something with the boat or trailer. The truck started to roll backwards and before he can do anything, the truck was submerged up to the windows.

I remember that too. I'm glad that something that terrible didn't happen to me this time.
