Dealer should install befroe the car is delivered. Also, the stock mat would have to(on a prius or tundra) move pretty far up to jam,as they are cut out rectangly around the accelator.
If this person would have hit the brakes maybe it will not go 120MPH. I dont care if you're driving around in a Z06, hitting the brakes hard will not make your car do 120MPH.
On another forum, there was a lengthy discussion of this incident using the police reports and 911 audio. To sum it up, the driver (a CHP officer) and his passengers, were all the biggest idiots on the planet. The accident was preventable in many ways, and has nothing to do with the stock Toyota floor mats.
Toyota is in no way at fault for this "issue", but they're still replacing all the mats because people are stupid and litigious.
Has anyone else heard of the new implication of "drive by wire" as the cause of the recent deadly crash with the Lexus? My friend tells me he saw in the news an accusation that drive by wire systems are at fault.
I just did a google/bing search and the only stuff out there is the "chicken little" idiots and "Wolf, wolf!" idiots posting stuff. I found zero actual article from a news service or anything credity worthy.... just IDIOTS
2005 Rockwood 26' 5'er, Michelin LTX MS tires, 270 watts of solar on the roof, 4 T-105 golf cart batteries, Xentrex converter, Outback FX2012T inverter/charger.

Yeah, I heard the same thing Monday...they seem to have dropped it now.
A few people that were in wrecks swear it wasn't the floor mats...they were talking to the news saying the car just took off and they knew it wasn't no floor mat. One lady drove herself into a lake or something like that.
After these people started screaming, the highway safety people then tested a whole bunch of Toyotas and found no problems with anything electrical...so now the news has stopped spreading the rumor.
Time will tell, but I say improperly secured, doubled up, or aftermarket floor mat is the culprit.

My Buddy at Toyota and I were chuckling over this one. This is a recall brought on by DumbAsses putting winter/ snow floor mats OVER their summer (carpet) floor mats. Sort of like the stupid chick in the US that sued MacDonalds for dumping coffee on herself. There are actually people out there that are in fact THAT STUPID !!!!
It has been noted,, this is just Toyota covering their asses. Good call... As for the ford recalls,,,well,, that's just poor quality and lack of workmanship...
cheers,

I just bought a new Tundra. When the dealership installed the mats, they "permanently" attached the driver's mat to the carpet with the same plastic ties used to attach the price tag to a new pair of jeans.

I initially thought the same thing. But I think it's different. Check the forum announcement I posted this morning. There's a link to Toyota's pressroom in it.
When I "installed" (hard to say that b/c it was so simple) all-weather mats in my Tundra, there was a big warning/caution tag dangling from the package stating very clearly DO NOT USE IN CONJUNCTION WITH EXISTING CARPET floor mats. FLOOR MAT COULD BECOME DISLODGED.... If it wasn't those words exactly, it was something very very similar. I too got a laugh out of that safety tag, thinking 'Would someone actually stack a new pair of floor mats on top of their old carpet mats?'
Then I thought, Really man? Seriously? Are people that stoopid?
Apparently yes.

This happened to me about 6 years ago. Owned a big 1 ton Ford powerstroke 4x4. Pulled out onto the road and mashed the peddle to the floor. Peddle hung under the edge of the floormat, all the way down, motor was howling! Had to actually reach down to the floor and pull the mat back to disengage it! Scared the p!$$ outta me! Seemed like the episode went on for 5 minutes, but it was no more than 5 seconds...but it seems like an eternity when its happening. Be careful!!
