After waiting for VVTi parts for over 2 weeks, my dealer reversed field (got additional info from Toyota) and changed the oil in my 2010 4.6 Tundra. Apparently there was some sort of oil contamination that caused the CEL to throw the VVTi code. The service manager was straight with me though...he says that at this time they HOPE this solves the problem, but they are not really sure what is going on. They assured me they would contact me when they found out the root cause.......Hmmm, contaminated oil in a brand new engine. If that turns out to be the issue, you can bet that I will be requesting a complementary Platinum Extended Warranty.
Hey man, not to hijack your thread but I'm in Baton Rouge and looking to buy a new tundra. I as was wondering how your buying experience was with Price Leblanc and if you would recommend them. Thx.
Its not contaminated oil! Its the break in oil which is going to have metal shavings and particles in it and gets caught up in the vvti system causing a CEL. I had the same issue, had the oil and filter changed and havent had a problem since. Thats why a lot of people stress to change your oil within the first couple hundred miles of a new vehicle.

Maybe...but I think I might have to disagree. If it was break in oil, the issue would be seen across the V8 range of powerplants with VTTi. So far, it has only occured in the 4.6 liter engine.
Bought my 2010 doublecab 4x4 5.7L two weeks ago and my check engine light came on after 200 miles. Thought it was the gas cap so I filled up and tightened it and nothing. Took it to Autozone for a quick scan and 5 possibilities came up. 1. camshaft position "A" timing over advanced bank. 2. blocked oil passage. 3. Mechanical timing fault. 4. Failed OCV. 5. VVT controller assembly fault. Anyway I was going to take it into the dealer that Monday but I went ahead and connected my trailer brake in the meantime and disconnected my negative on the battery. I knew the light would go off but I expected it to come right back on after driving but it hasn't. Called Toyota and they said to bring it in when the light comes back on. It's been well over a week. Makes me wonder how sensitive these lights are and if the dealerships are just blowing smoke up our rears when the can't diagnose the problem.
a dealer blowing smoke up your booty?NAAAAAAHHHHH could never happen!
i think you're the first i hear of a 5.7l having the vvt problem.hope it's just a fluke.
cctundra could be right with contamination by leftover deposits in engine after assembly as mostly the 4.6l seem concerned by this.
Like i said before I had vvti bank 1 replaced at 200 miles now have 1200 miles with no cel comming on. whos your dealer like to know if toyota is going to do anything. They did replace the oil and coolant when the did the repair. If this true they didnt have to dismantel my new engine that dosent sit very well with me.

The link in my previous post is referring to the 5.7 engine. You hear about the problem more in the 4.6 but this has occurred in the 5.7's. You can see in my garage at the top of this post what year model i currently have and what engine size.

I was going up toward Oxford, MS this weekend to catch the Arkansas-Ole Miss game. On the way I had a ({!}) light up next to the oil gauge. I thought wtf. The oil gauge pointer would move between medium and 3/4 every time the engine would go onto over drive or I reved the engine. The light went out 100 miles later. I have checked the oil 5x since times. That needle moves everytime the engine has any stress on it or stop and take off. I don't seem to remember this happening before. I could be crazy. Is this similar to what has happened to you? I looked in the owners manual and the description is vague. Think I should take it back to North Lake Toyota for a check?

The movement with the oil gauge is normal and as for the light that was your tire pressure sensor.

Thanks for pointing that out. All of this talk about the 4.6L has me paranoid. *knocks on wood*. I found on page 595 the description. You would think they would put that warning light else where so dummies like me wouldn't look at that oil gauge and freak out. Thanks again guys!
