Default AFE Stage 2 SI Cold Air Intake

Cold Air Intake System Stage 2 Si Toyota Tundra- 07-09 V8-5.7L 54-81172 - aFe Power

I installed the Advanced Flow Engineering Stage 2 SI Cold Air Intake prior to my last trip pulling a U-haul trailer. Generally, it had a very minor, if any, sound difference in normal driving. When going down hill and using engine compression breaking, noise picked up but wasn't objectionable. Going uphill, around 4K RPMs something changed and it got VERY loud. The pickup was obviously working very hard and the engine was heavily loaded and noise from the engine (sort of like a Jake brake on a diesel truck) was excessive. Going downhill, at the same 4K RPM a difference in sound occurred but, it was muffled and not nearly as loud.

Overall, I don't have a valid "seat of the pants" feel for power but, I was impressed with how my pickup ran up 6% and 8% grades with a heavy load. I have Doug Thorley's installed too so, they were a contributing factor. Gas mileage with a heavy trailer was pretty bad on the hard hill climbs but, it had power to spare and could power over the top with a normal velocity avoiding the "slow lane" if I so chose.

Intially, I was concerned about the excessive noise. However, that really only occurs with heavy loads and high RPMs. Around town there might be a little more rumble but, it is pleasant and is combination of the dual cat-backs, DT headers, and CAI.

Overall, the larger surface area of the AFE filter appears to be feeding the engine much better. It's too early to tell if the gas mileage will be affected but, initially I am seeing ~1 MPG improvement in normal driving but, the margin of error on such a small change needs further refinement before any absolute statements about better gas mileage are made.

Most aftermarket CAI's are going to be alot louder than your restrictive stock factory air box. Even when your not towing any load, that big 5.7 is a little thirsty for air and fuel to begin with. Ive got the same CAI as you do, and just becase your really hearing the beast under the hood now, doesnt mean theres any reason to be concerned. I also started to see ~1-2 mpg gain after i installed the intake. (I have an exhaust too)

Most vehical manufactures especialy, toyota and lexus are primaraly concered with noise control first, performace second. Just they way it goes i guess...

Same CAI and same experience here. Intake is pretty quiet under normal driving conditions, nice moderate growl at heavy throttle.... and very loud growl when pulling my 34' travel trailer up a reasonable grade. Love the intake though.

I have the open style stage 2. I like the sound at 4000 plus rpm. I think its the sound of the vvti kicking in that makes it louder at that range. Not that I spend a lot of time at those revs. Too thirsty.

2.5 to 3.2MPG isn't that bad is it?

I may screw up the conversion here but I will give it a try. 98 cents per litre to fill up. 3.7854 litres per US gallon. Price at the pump converted $3.71 per gallon. Cost to fill up at that price $80.50 Cdn.
Dropping the hammer just to hear that baby howl= F#$%ing priceless.
