Default Another MPG question

I just bought a 2010 CM 4x2 limited 5.7L tundra. I'm freaking out abit over the MPG reported by my computer. For the first tank I through those numbers out, but the second tank seems to hover around 13MPG with mostly city driving @ 14.4 average speed with slow to normal acceleration. Sticker says 14 city and 18 Highway. I have had the CE light come on for the cam shaft issue, but that was on the first tank. So I have two questions that I need answers for. 1) Is the tundra computer accurate? 2) Does the MPG get better after some miles are put on it? I have seen some unreal stats on MPG for some of the folks on here, and I can't believe that I could be so much worse with having a light foot. Help!!!!

Thanks in advance......

That's about the same mileage I get. 12-13 around town, 15 highway, 17 if I go slow (as in not 80mph)

Trucks suck for gas mileage, period. The weight kills you around town and the frontal area kills you highway.

Mine stays consistently around 16.5 but I do not do any driving that you would consider city.

Mine sits between 12.5-13.5 all city driving. I never hit speeds over maybe 60mph.

Noticed you said the CEL came on after your first tank, mine too. It's actually on right now for the third time in the last month with my doublecab with only 430 miles on it. Toyota dealer here tells me not to bring it in unless the light is on but everytime I get ready to take it in the damn light goes off. What's your service tech telling you about the light?

your fine. people do not get 20 mpg out of this thing regardless of how many claims people put up here. its not gong to happen, mid teens is best for an average. dont sweat it, but if it is of concern maybe you shouldnt be in a full size big motored truck....try a prius.

If I drive normally in hilly terrain, I get about 13MPG. Mixed driving in town I get 18.5MPG consistently. On the highway, MPG depends on velocity - at 65MPH on flat terrain with no adverse frontal wind I will knock on the door of 20MPG. If I'm loping along at 55MPH barely above idle, I will obviously beat that.

Once your pickup is broken in a little, it will get slightly better mileage. Your driving technique will also greatly affect MPG.

honestly i dont see why u would be freaking out at all...even you state you are getting what the sticker says....around 13 and 14 are pretty dam close to one another...plus read the sticker, thats an average, it will show a range in small text under that that you could expect and everyone knows the sticker MPGS arent real world...even the new epa guidelines....ur almost always gonna get less...unless ur highway drivnig is the 48mph or whatever ridiculous number they use....so id say u are right on the money for mostly city driving...

2010 DC, 5.7, - 14.5 to 15.5 city driving with many red lights. 17 mpg at 75 mph highway. 20-21 mpg highway at 65 mph. Keep your truck under 2k on the tack or be willing to pay for the ride. I'm at 2,200 miles now and see a little improvement in mileage as the engine breaks in. Make sure your tires are inflated higher than what is shown on the door! We did buy a 5,000 lb truck you know.....

Sticker states 14 - 18 and you are having an issue with 13 on a new truck with the motor not even broke in yet? Heck even with the motor broke in the sticker says average, meaning some folks will get lower and some will get higher. Relax, drive the truck and when you get about 4,000 miles on the motor should be starting to settle in, then you might do better .

I don't check my mileage except when on a trip, the fuel gauge is all I really need to watch, when it gets low I fill up no matter what mileage I get. FYI I do get over 18 on the highway .

Well just that it should be ok after they change the oil. I will keep a close watch.

I had a 2007 Tundra, RCLB, 5.7 and I do Atlanta combined driving of 50% city and 50% highway. Had about 7,500 miles on it when I traded it. And I always checked my mileage by hand with a topped off tank and in a log so calculations were on target.

(FYI, I do not top off any vehicle gas tanks to the last drop now after replacing a charcoal canister). ...

With the 5.7's massive amounts of torque ... it's real easy to keep it in 6th gear with no stress on transmission.

Just before I traded the Tundra, I did get 20.2 mpg on a level level ground in south GA, doing 55 - 60 and keeping it in 6th and rpms low. Keeping it flat & level and at 55-60 mph with a light foot does wonders.

In Atlanta area I got 14.1 as a low (when I wanted to hear the TRD duals ) to an average of 17.3 city/highway driving.

I now have a 2009 Tacoma DCSB, TRD, OR that gets 19.1 mpg average now and I am going to take the Taco on a trip to south GA where I can probably get 23 mpg on the flat ground doing 50-60 mph.

The mileage does much better if you watch your shift points and rpms and drive like an egg is on the gas pedal. A 7,500 mile "broken-in engine" helps and maybe Mobile 1 helps a tiny bit too.

IMO .. with regular & combined city/highway driving, you can expect about 15.5 mpg.

.

First: The sticker is a general guidline based upon controlled tests that is no guarantee of your real world mileage but rather a general measuring stick which you can use for comparison purposes when vehicle shopping. Real world driving, weather, and road conditions can bring this up or down. If you look at the sticker again below those numbers it should say something along the lines that these numbers are an estimate, and that in real world driving owners can expect anywhere in a range between two numbers for city and anywhere in a range between two higher numbers for highway.

2nd:

On my first road trip with my 09 Crewmax 5.7 4x4 with 150 pounds or so of gear and a 250 pound passenger, I started with literally 500 miles on the clock. With steady cruise control at 60-65 mph and limited throttle I got 18.7 mpg. That was calculated by hand, miles traveled on first tank over gallons consumed. I never compared it to the trip computer and dont pay much attention to it so I couldn't really tell you exactly how accurate it is. But I probably would do it by hand before trusting those numbers. I imagine on my truck 19 highway would be doable with only me, no cargo, and the cruise at 55 mph flat for a tank or two.

Since this first trip with the truck broken in I have partaken of the 381 horses far more often and average about 14mpg mixed. It has sank to as low as high 13s if Im strictly city, stop and go and as high as 16s if I do some brief highway trips and don't go pedal to the medal all the time. Im sure I could do close to 19 again but I really don't normally have the patience to drive like that too often. 13MPG mostly city does not sound far off at all to me. Yeah, it sucks but it is what it is. If it helps to put it in perspective remember, 25 or more years ago nearly 400 horses in a vehicle this size probably would have meant 9, maybe 10 mpg.
