Reminder: if you want to rent the Mongoose cable then just reply to this thread and say so. Do not send me a PM as I am using this thread to keep the requests in order. I will start at the top of the thread and work my way down so it is first-come, first-served. If your turn comes up and you are not ready then I will just go to the next person. It is too much of a hassle for me to track the PMs separately and people on the thread won't see those so let's just keep it simple with all requests posted in this thread. I will send you the details via PM as soon as your turn comes up. Here is the list I have so far:

A few other notes:

I tested this on my wife's 2004 RAV4 and it did connect just fine. There were less ECUs and options available but all the same functionality was there and it worked just fine. This is normal as the older vehicles had fewer ECUs, sensors, and monitors and they were not designed to be as configurable. The available options also depend on what factory options and equipment you have installed, so don't expect to be able to configure the sunroof options if you don't have a sunroof...

Regarding the Bluetooth, USB, or WIFI interfaces: I do think the manufacturers should add some type of modern interface to the vehicles. They don't necessarily have to enable all tech functions such as engine tuning and ECU flashing but all of the user configurable items and standard monitors / trouble code data should be available. I have seen official documents from Toyota which confirm that they deliberately restricted some of these functions to the Techstream interface to drive service revenue for the dealers, which in turn allowed the dealers to pay $8,000 per Techstream laptop, which in turn allowed Toyota to build the software and roll out the technology. My problem with this is that the consumer was not informed that there are many options which can only be controlled by the dealer for a fee, and that some of these options were so common that they should have been made available through the dash controls. I would gladly pay $500 more for a vehicle that has a built-in WIFI interface that allows me to control everything myself vs. taking a day off from work and paying the dealer $50-$100 every time I need a simple change done. And I sure as he!! don't appreciate 4-5 different trouble lights coming on the dash all at once, making me think that the truck is ready to disintegrate, when in fact it is just a simple trouble code for a condition which is unrelated to most of the trouble lights. This would be like sounding a fire alarm in a building to let someone know that there is a small leak in the kitchen faucet. If I didn't have my own OBDII meter or Mongoose MFC then I would have to pay for a tow to the dealer, take a day off work, and pay a diagnostic fee to find out something that should have been visible on my dash, PDA, or home PC. The manufacturers will eventually get there and all vehicles will be just another part of your home network.

The rental process will work like this:
  1. I notify you via PM that it is your turn. You reply with your email address.
  2. I send you a payment request from Google Checkout for $235. This covers $25 for the cable rental, $5 for priority mail shipping each way, and a $200 deposit which is refunded when the cable is returned.
  3. You pay via debit or credit card and I ship the cable out with all required items and instructions. I send you the package tracking link via email.
  4. You get the cable and have 2 days to use it. Change all your settings and do whatever tests or monitors you desire. If you keep it longer then it will cost $25 for each additional 2-day period, to be deducted from your $200 deposit.
  5. You ship the cable back to me in the pre-paid return container which is included with the shipment. You notify me via email when it has been shipped and I inform the next person on the list.
  6. I receive the cable, verify nothing is missing or damaged, refund your deposit, and send it on to the next person.
So this will work out to about 1 week per person, maybe sooner depending on how quick people are with shipping it back. It only took me 10 minutes to set all of my options so some people will be able to send it back sooner if they don't need to play around with the diagnostic monitors.

You are so much more elegant in your words than I...of course this information should be available to the buyer of the rig. Agreed that not the flash or engine tuning type items.

I agree having access to most of these things should be pretty easy heck they already give us Limited users access to change some of the features via the on screen dash display and it would of made it better to allow us to be able to do the other settings but I too have say some times given a customer to much access to even what we here percive as a simple change would just cause more trouble and problems for the toyota service departments when a customer makes changes by accident or just plain don't know what they are changing then calls the service department complaining about now my locks don't work the way they used too or now my truck locks on its own and it didn't do that before. So its a fine line some times to make both the customer and service folks happy.
I deal with customer service needs all the time at work and have to say OMG what were these people thinking oh wait they wern't before they called or asked for help. But thats the way things are so we all learn to deal with it and in this economy its job security.

Still have to say it is good to finally find a way we can make these changes on our own and without having to deal with the dealer for a resonable price considering the cost of everything.

Thank you wileetundra! This is great for the members! My truck is pretty well configured the way I like it so you can pass me on the list. I would like to try it one day, though. What were you able to do on the RAV4? My wife has an 05 RAV4. Does it have an alarm as well?

i realize this may bring other issues forth such as knowing who damaged what but if all members here assume a deposit then the next recipient could contact you directly if a problem arose.
you would of course tell the last user where the cable should go next via pm unless you feel there might be a privacy issue and you as the originator would still be in control.
just an idea that would some $$ in shipping and time as well.
this is all based on everyone being an honorable member of this endeavour that is!
I had considered that but decided against it for several reasons. I have $500 invested in the cable so I don't want to make others responsible for testing it between handoffs. It would be too messy if a problem was found and people would be pointing fingers in all directions with no clear way to determine who was responsible. With the current process it will be very clear how long the cable is used and who is responsible if there is any damage so I want to keep it simple. Also, I am big on protecting privacy and I don't want to share the names and addresses of the recipients with anyone because I would not want my personal info shared in this manner. I also won't know for sure who to send the cable to next until it comes back to me and is confirmed to be in good shape, and I need to confirm that the next recipient has paid before I ship the cable to them. And the prepaid shipping labels are a lot easier for the recipient to just send the cables back to me when they are done vs. waiting on a name and address and then having to go to the post office to buy postage. I believe my process will be faster in the end because the recipient can drop it right back in any mailbox the minute they are done with it and I will be using priority mail so it shouldn't take more than 2-3 days per hop. If this gets complicated then I will just rent the cable locally but I am trying to help my fellow TS members out so I am willing to give it a whirl. It is a lot of hassle for me and I don't need the money or the headache but I am willing to do it to help. This forum has been an awesome resource so I like to give back when I can.

Please put me on the list.
Also did you see anything about the drivers side seat belt chime? Also maybe anything on the Toyota factory remote start. The remote start is worthless becuase when you unlock the doors it kills the engine.

Thanks

I don't think the driver seat belt chime can be disabled in the ECU, at least not on the 2007 Tundra. You can disable the passenger chime but for the driver side you would need to remove or replace the buzzer. There is a thread on this forum showing how to do it.

I didn't see the remote start options but I haven't finished exploring all the settings yet, and my truck doesn't have remote start installed so the options may not be visible on my truck even if they are normally available.

I've read thru this whole thread but I'm still confused on, do you use on your laptop or do you ship one with the cable? If I use my laptop do I have to install any software?

Also did you see anything about the drivers side seat belt chime? Also maybe anything on the Toyota factory remote start. The remote start is worthless becuase when you unlock the doors it kills the engine.

Thanks

My 08 has both chimes disabled, don't know of any differences between 07 and 08.
No luck on the remote start. I know of other manufacturer factory remote all doing the same thing. Could be mandated or a liability thing.
It must not be too bad for anyone with it as I have offered to buy the factory one and no one ever was interested

Still a little confused. We're getting like a sw to be installed on the computer that'll work on any Toyota if we have that 25$ cable?

Can we just "buy" the cable afterwards?
