I have a 2011 DC 5.7 2WD Base/SR5 truck which has the 8-pin Drive Monitor Switch plug. I have plans to purchase & install the Drive Monitor Switch, part #84977-0C020 in the next day or so. From everything I've read, I'm assuming I'll probably have to do the mod. If possible, I think I'd prefer to do dpoll995's ***Optional Wiring Choice*** (see below).

Question: Will the below ***Optional Wiring Choice*** work with both the 6-pin and 8-pin Drive Monitor Switch plug? Reference the 8-pin Drive Monitor Switch, can/would you remove existing wires in slot/pin #2 and slot/pin #3 (and set them aside UNused), then remove the purple wire from slot/pin #7 and move it to slot/pin #2, and then remove the blue wire from slot/pin #8 move it to slot/pin #3?

I'm assuming the speedo assembly does *not* need to be removed since J28 doesn't need to modified, correct?

Along with the Drive Monitor Switch plug mod, the only other mod necessary is JL1 (blue wired moved from pin #4 to pin #19, purple wire from pin #5 to pin #17), correct?

    Thanks!

--------- Copied from PoPo's post #2 from this thread --------------
    ***OPTIONAL WIRING CHOICE***

Instead of adding those wires, you can "recycle" two of the existing wires that are already at the harneses!

At the Drive Monitor switch, pull the wires/pins from slots 7 (purple) and 8 (blue). Move them to the blank slots in the connector, Purple to #2, and Blue to #3. At the JL1-Connector, disconnect the 2-sides of the connector. On the FEMALE side, remove the Blue wire (Pin #4) and move it to Pin #19. Remove the Purple wire (Pin #5) and move it to #17. This should be all you need!

Thanks to dpoll995 for this info!
FIRST OFF: Thanks, and make sure you post back once you complete the mod.
2nd: Using the "recycle" method, you shouldn't need to remove the speedo cluster, just the bottom panel to get access to the lower harness (JL1) under/behind the wheel.
3rd: I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work, regarding 6-wire or 8-wire harness... as long as the necessary wires are present.

I may have a friend hitting up a j/y this weekend and I was hoping to get some pins from a wreck. I searched this entire thread and did not see pictures of the pins. Anybody got one or can take one? Since there are no Tundras there, I cannot say get from this or that connector

I was thinking the recycle method will take shorter time so I started recycling the wires and swap the 2 pins on the drive monitor switch using a precision flat screwdriver but when I got to the JL1 connector, I got stuck and cannot figure out how to pull and remove the pins. I said screw it and I reversed back the 2 pins back to their original location, tear out my dash to ran the 2 wires between the J28 and JL1 connectors instead. Now everything works!

I have a 2011 Crewmax base model with 8 wires behind the blanks. I'm confused about the "wiring option" of recycling some wires... I don't have sonar so is this an option for me?

Mark me as Down for a successful install! 2011 sr5 4x4 Crewmax with blanks.

By far the best Mod EVER, and it's super easy! Took me about 30 minutes (I was very careful and took my time). Thanks too PoPo for starting this thread. I ordered the part off eBay from toyotagregg for $81 shipped. I used a double 18 Gauge wire. Attached are some pics...

Congrats! Which version of the install did you do? Recycle?

No I had 8 wires at switch. I ran the 2 wires from J28 and JL1

I also have a 2011 with the 8-pin connector, but I'm hoping to do the "recycle" install.

As I mentioned in my previous post (and PM), it appears the wires at 7 & 8 (not used if there's no Sonar) can be swapped for 2 & 3. If so, then it would only require moving the two appropriate wires/pins at JL1 and the speedo console would not have to be removed (access to J28 would not be necessary).

You asked about the "recycle" install in your previous post, so I wasn't sure whether you took this approach or not.

Finally! Stupid bad connection on the reset wire. Chalk me up as a 2007 SR5 5.7L w/ tow. Added 2 wires from J28 to JL1. Just in time for my next trip towing a travel trailer. Really wanted the MPG info and very much appreciate the hard work and community effort here!

Add me to the list please. Easiest mod ever done for my truck. Now the blank dummy that was there is functional. The switch works as my 2010 did. Thanks!

i have a 2012 crewmax base. plugged in and the temp (F/C) works instantly but the MPG/distance to empty does not work. i ran the J28/JL1 wires and checked them twice, making sure they are secured. went for a drive...and still nothing. Is the 2012 prewired differently? Help please!
