    Default Serpentine belt keeps shredding!

Well first I appreciate all the help yall provide and hopefully someone can help me. Sunday the 6th I had my truck towed to NTB because my belt was shredding so they replaced it and said I need to change my water pump because it was leaking but they need to get the part from the dealer so I could do it later. Well this morning started the truck heard a noise and my belt started to come apart again and wrap around my fan so I am towing it to them again. Is there a problem that happens with these like the pully's are misaligned or do you think defective belt. I just want to be sure I can cover bull answers when they tell me whats wrong because they have to warrantee it.

A bad tension idler can cause that to happen.

+2 was going to say I heard of this only a few times but this is what it was. Also you may want to check if you still fall into the TSB on this but since you didn't mention the year of your truck not sure if this applies.

Yep. Occasionally, something stops turning, and it's usually the tensioner.
But tensioners typically ride on the back of the belt, and usually won't shred the belt unless the tensioner is froze up solid.

It could be any one of the pulleys, but the odds are that the bearing in the tension idler pulley is shot.

Toyota said they won't do it for free since I am over the 36,000 mile mark. I think I'm at 80 or 90,000 miles now. NTB said they would give me a belt for free and I might change the tensioner pulley myself I guess. I'll just have to cross my fingers.

moutonja, I had the exact same situation you did. I had replaced my 4th belt in 66k miles. At 48k miles , toyota told me that my tensioner was bad and replaced the tensioner and water pump along with the belt. About 10k miles later it ate another belt. Thats when I switched to the gatorback and got good results until 66k miles so I just threw on another gatorback. To my surprise it ate the next belt in less than 24 hrs! At that time I gave in and went to the Stealership. They told me the tensioner had failed and that the idler was sitting at an angle, loose. My pulley was eating the first rib off the belt everytime. Not snapping the belt in two but would just take the first rib off and wrap it around another pulley. If you had similar symptoms with your belt just do yourself a favor and swap that tensioner first. Good luck, -Craig

I had to replace mine also. I live in Houston and can lend a hand if you need. It's pretty easy. You will need a quality set of Allen's. The one in the center of the pulley can be a B. I bought mine from joe Myers for about 60 or so. I have also done my own water pump if you need some help. Took me about 5 hrs taking my time.

2007 Crewmax. At about 80k i looked at my belt and it was shredding too. I brought it in andluckily purchased the extended warranty.
The ideler pullys were manufactured incorectly more cone shaped than cup. This destryed my water pump also. Toyota replaced everything for free and so far so good

Seriously, NTB for a serpentine belt replacement. I've had situations where they could barely put tires on correctly.

Wow thanks for all the help! Reason for NTB is I was an hour and a half from home with no tools on a sun so
    they were the only hope.

This is what Joe Myers Toyota is quoting me! I can't believe they actually do any work for these prices!? They want $100.00 for the tensioner pulley and $186.00 for the belt if I buy the parts to do it myself but NTB will give me a belt for free since I paid for it. I didn't even ask about the water pump! So next question what should I buy from the dealer and what should I call around for? I am going to do the work myself this Sat so TRDDunn if you are available to help out that would be awsome! Just email me at jamesallenmouton@yahoo.com if so and I will give you the address and phone number.

I don't think that I would rush right into that service department for anything. They seem to be a bit overpriced!
