    Default Engine Braking

So i have about 6k on my 2012 tundra. the engine braking was one of the frist things i noticed about it when i got it compared to the 2000 tundra. at first the engine braking was very noticeable, especially going down hills, but it seems that it is not kicking in as much as it used to while still going down all the same hills at generally the same speeds. it still comes on at certain times, just not as frequently.

is this an issue or has it somehow adjusted to how i drive?

    Thanks

Tap the brake pedal smartly, but lightly, as you begin a descent ... your transmission will drop to a lower gear to give you more engine braking. Or you can bump the shift lever into a lower gear.

This pdf file explains it, but it does not seem to be totally predictable.

I believe all of the Tundra's produced since 07' do this. I know the two Tundra's we have in my family do it and have different engines too. You get used to it. It takes time for the control module to "learn" your driving pattern and adjust the shift points a bit. I had a re-flash (TS-B) on my 4.6L and it took about a week for the computer to re-learn my driving habits after the dealership visit. Very happy with it now. Enjoy your new truck.

I just bought a used 08. Should i unhook the battery and reset the truck so it can learn my driving?

You can, but it is not necessary. It will figure that out anyway. The only thing that a battery reset will do is change the starting setup for the learning process.
