Default To install 488 gears or not? Thanks for the help!

Hi, I'm considering installing 488 gears on my 2011 Tundra 4x4. I've had some modifications: 6" lift (Pro Comp), 35" tires... These modifications have caused a loss of about 5mpg, which I was pre-warned about. I've seen conflicting info, on whether or not changing the gears will help my fuel consumption or not. I'm also wondering if there are any other issues with this change? One post I saw earlier said something about many lights on the dash coming on after the gear change. I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

If you're thinking of doing this only to regain some of the fuel mileage lost due to the oversized tires, there's a question of practicality: Will you have the Tundra long enough that the fuel mileage regained will offset the cost of acquiring and having these gears installed front and rear?
The lift had a negligable affect on fuel mileage.

I do plan to keep the truck for a long time. I purchased my last truck, new, in 1996, a Dodge Cummins, and sold it with over 220000 miles. So, if I really will see a gain of 1-2 MPG, it would be worth it to me. Thanks!

In your case, it's well worth it. It will help restore the torque on low rpm's for towing, hauling heavy or if you just want to accelerate quick.

You mean 4.88 gear, correct? That will certainly help getting some of the power lost (due to larger tires) back, but not mpg. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get both power and mpg improvement. See the chart attached below.

With the bigger tires its as if you're driving uphill everywhere you go. With the new gears 4.88 it brings you back to level ground. It's too bad you can't use 5.14

I've had em since about 2007. I run 31.5" tires. I used to put 315-75/16's on my truck and it really bogged it down compared to the 31.5's or 305-65/17. That's why I say, "too bad you can't run 5.14's. idk if the 2gens have that option yet. I know that it's available for my 1gen but with the ring gear only 8.4" compared to your 10.5" I'd really strip teeth.

Haha. I've broken 3 Detroit lockers. (Complete pos btw) and 4 sets of Randy's ring and pinion/ Yukon. Stick with the name brands no matter what ratio u go. With 35's at least go 4.88 and your truck wi drive normally again. I believe justdiffs is trying to put together a group buy right now
