TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "2007 Toyota Tundra Complete", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
A toyota salesperson told me yesterday that he was at a meeting and learned the following,
The new tundra will be available next spring with a 5.4 L V-8 and 10,000 lbs towing ability. no diesel until a few more years and the truck will be much bigger.
If those come out in 2007, it's probably best to wait a couple of years so they work out all the bugs. I have a friend that bought a Titan the first year they came out and rue's the day.

I did not think the new San Antonio plant where the new Tundra will be built will be in production until July/Aug time frame next year? Unless they are going to make a run of 07 tundras in the existing plant?

I really doubt that the present Tundra chassis can safely control a 5 ton trailer. I'd want a long wheelbase 3/4-ton truck for that trailer and an engine bigger than 5.4L.

You guys forgetting something. Remember that when the tundra first came out it had the strongest frame as I remembered toyota claimed. Back then the domestics are already rated to tow more, well into the 8k range, even with a weaker frame. It wasn't until the past few years that everyone upgrade to boxed frame, only then did they have a stronger frame and not by much. Well, I wouldn't call it stonger, just more rigid. Rigid doesn't always mean strength, why else would semi's not have rigid frames. You don't want to snap a frame cuz it won't flex to absorb the torque. Currently it's not the frame I'm worried about, it's the bearings, brakes, axles, gears, and it's light weight.

Absolutely correct... there are a lot of things that make a great towing truck handle the loads, and most of them, just as you mentioned, are not conducive to a plush ride. Most of these also move in various degrees with the suspension. Also as you mentioned, big wheel bearings are a must if there is going to be a heavy tongue load, so long hops with a heavy load in the Tundra is not a wise idea.
I used to drive around in a F350 and F550 which rode like bricks, but they could pull anything. I'd put a full ton on the flatbed when driving "without load" just to soften things up A BIT. Nobody wants this for daily driving though, so we compromise.
My Tundra is great, but even pretty lightweight enclosed trailer bogs her down due to the wind resistance. The 4.7 is nice, but when it comes to towing, it's kind of a pooch. Don't think I'd ever consider pulling even 8000lbs even if it was rated for it. Big displacement diesel if you do this a lot.
As far as I know they are planning a totally new redesign of the new Tundra or whatever they are going to call it and it is said to be larger and much beefier to handle the extra towing capacity. The whole truck is supposed to be bigger than the current Tundra. I don't think they were just planning to beef up the frame a little in the regular Tundra and call it a new heavy duty model but I guess we will find out when it comes out. Kind of curious what the HP and torque fugures will be as well as the gas mileage.

If Toyota is able to continue with bigger engine, more power, better gas mileage as they did in the past in the tacoma, maybe the new tundra will give much better gas mileagethan the current one. Lets's hope

The question is does Toyota think there is a big enough market at this point in time for a large 1 ton pickup. I think that will decide wheather they jump in with both feet. If they think the market is softening up , I think we will see somehting like the new f150, which is more/less the same as the old f150 but dressed up to look like a bigger tougher truck. If they think the market is truly strong, then we will see a true heavy duty work truck from the bottom up. Toyota have been making medium/heavy duty work trucks forever in other markets, they certainly have the experience. The other thing which must concern them is the price. Toyota typically can demand a premium for there trucks, I will assume that a lot of the F250/F350 type trucks are leased by contractors, especially in the fall when the last year stock is dumped. It might be hard to justify $5-10k for a toyota over a 36-48 month lease.

My dealer was out west and saw it.
5.7 L V-8 with 400 hp.
It's a full size truck.
4.7 L is still available.
I ain't happy about the bigger size truck.
Wonder if the 5.7 L will fit in my 2005 engine bay?

I hope the "new" truck is a bit bigger, but still manageable and "fuel efficient." Its nice they are keeping the 4.7 (Cropdoc). I wonder what displacement the rumored hybrid engine will be available in, and if it will truly perform as Toyota has hyped. That is the engine I'm interested because I predominantly use my truck as my daily commuter.

I had an 03' SR5 TRD and sold it and bought an 05' (identical in color and model with a couple of extra features like factory tow package instead of distributor installed tow package). I am calling my dealer soon and see what he thinks I can get a late 06' for if the 07' comes out early as someone reported. I will retail the 05' myself as they sell for high $$ and fast. I have had zero problems with the 05' as well as the 03' and would expect the 06' to be about as defect free as it could be after 6 years. And, I love the design and size of the current Tundras. After that I would probably wait until late 08' or 09' to trade again (assuming we can even afford to drive a truck by then!).
If there's one thing I've learned about sales people it's that they're almost never right. I heard a million and one different things about the 05 tacoma before it was released and almost all of what the dealers told me was false. One dealer told me it had a spray in bed liner, same dealer told me it was going to have a V8 option, another told me it was going to be the same size as the last gen with a lot more power. These guys know nothing, and Toyota knows not to trust them with any real info because they're all meat heads. The real truth will be revealed when the truck is released. Until then it's all speculation.
