In another thread, a few members were discussing the merits of buying a new Taco vs the new Tundra behemoth.
I think this discussion is worthy of its own thread.
Its just the three little pigs all over again.
The old Tacoma was too small, the new Tundra is too big, so the new Tacoma DC should be just right!
I'd have to agree. I like the size of the new Tacoma, especially in a Double Cab, but like Plugnickel said...I just can't get used to the idea of a plastic box.
If the Tacoma had an optional 4.7 and could tow as much as my current Tundra...I'd be there. Especially if the mileage was a bit better.
So my question to the collective "you" is whether or not you'd get the biggie size Tundra or a medium sized Tacoma?

My 2002 AC is still running great and don't see any reason to buy a new truck, but if I was in the market, I would look at an AC Tacoma. I don't understand why the new Tundra line had to have two four door model and a standard cab??. For my needs the AC is the best. Maybe Toyota will fix this oversite!

I think they were just trying to copy Dodge, which has a 2 door, 4 door, and 4 door mega cab.

When I can buy a new truck, it will be a tough choice IF there is a V8 Tacoma and a diesel Tundra available. Depending on my needs, I would probably go with the V8 Tacoma. If neither of these are available, then my next truck will be an 05 or 06 Tundra DC.
the current tacoma towing capacity is 6500lbs, last gen tundra was 6800 i believe? the current tacoma is very capable, someone on another forum is towing a rather large RV traler with no problems. the 4.0L is very strong.
There was a Tacoma at the recent SEMA show in LV that had a 4.7L in it. It looked so factory that I never thought twice about it until a few days later when I was lurking in the Taco forum section and learned this engine wasn't an option in Tacos.
So, since the Taco is larger these days (and apparently doesn't ride like a recycled beer can anymore), maybe they're getting ready put a 4.7L in it.
I think the small V8 option in the Taco would be nice to fill the gap, but I'm not sure how much demand there is for it. It would basically compete in the weird size that the Dakota is in.
Although I will say that the Taco is a great size for those of us who need a truck that is the pre-07 Tundra size for trails etc. Oh and that wouldn't be doing heavy towing or not wanting to drop $40K.
In reality though the Taco is also pretty pricey and I would imagine that a V8 would push it into Regular Cab Tundra territory.
A Tacoma with a 4.7L access cab would be great. Especially if it was better mileage than a Tundra. I have talked to a few people who bought Tacomas and for towing purposes (not large RVs) they wish they would have went with the Tundra. I sure as heck don't need a crew cab, the AC is just right to put gear, etc in.
That is a good point, I have an 01 AC Tundra and frankly for me, the wife and the dog, the AC is perfect, that leaves me room for the toolbox in the bed and still enough bed for a yard of mulch, lumber etc.
When I need a new truck maybe I will look hard at teh Taco
I can't see a Taco getting a V8. The V6 is very strong and is quicker than the Tundra (not the 5.7) . if Toyota did put a V8 in a Taco, I would think it would be a special race type edition with limited numbers.
As for the plastic box, whats the down side on that??
I would be in a Taco today if it was quieter, smoother, and the seats were higher. The Tundy feels like more than just a bigger Toyota truck.

I just traded off my Tacoma doublecab it was a great truck. My only complaints was it was to tight in the backseat with my kids in carseats. If they would of been sitting on the seat it would have been fine but the way it was both kids had there feet on the front seat. Also the tank is way to small and its to hard on fuel. But for towing it was great i had about 3000lbs on my sled deck for about 3200km up and down mountains and it had no troubles.
There was a thread a few weeks ago on Ford trucks.com that had one fella talking about how his tacoma out pulled his Superduty with the 5.4l when towing his smaller construction trailer.
My brother has a 2003 tundra and I cant see his doing anything much better than my Tacoma did besides a little bigger box and more elbow room. Plus the Tacoma is alot more fun to drive. I work in the oilfield and already miss my Taco for Bajaing down lease roads. I went back to a Superduty Diesel until Toyota gets it together.
Cheers

Reading about the new Dakota with a 4.7L V-8 I can't imagine Toyota not putting their 4.7L in the Tacoma in the near future. Besides, I think they expect 60-80% of the new Tundras to be built with the 5.7L so where will they put the 100,000 or so 4.7L they build a year.

Um, maybe they won't build 100 000 4.7' s this year . Just a thought
